The beloved robot with a heart gets a new look using a small batch manufacturing method made popular popular in Japan.

What makes this one different is the materials used – it’s soft vinyl. In Japan it’s called sofubi. The method has become popoluar with art toy lines – like Unbox Industries – that produce exclusive and small batches of toys. A lot of the companies/studios that make these toys are small and have maybe 4-5 employees; the studios that create collector’s peices can be one person shops.

The method uses soft PVC and rotocasting; and they resulting toys are traditionally painted using layers of airbrushed paint. Rotocasting uses centrifugal force to force plastic into a steel mould, and produces a hollow object. It’s a cheaper, easier method than injection moulding that uses less plastic.
