Blackstone Fortress’ new difficulty level introduces a number of abominable challenges that are sure to satisfy the most tactically minded players.

As you play through Blackstone Fortress your characters will grow in power (assuming they don’t die) and eventually become more powerful than you can possibly imagine–which is great up until you start to play through again and everything is a foregone conclusion. That’s where Abominable Intellect comes in. This set of cards offers you a way to crank the difficulty of every single Blackstone Fortress encounter–as well as those in the expansions.

All you have to do is swap out your old, baby-level difficulty encounter cards for the ones in Abominable Intellect and you’ll get a fresh take on the old familiar encounters. And if you’re thinking they’ll just add more monsters/adversaries, that’s one way to up the difficulty level, but it’s far from everything they’re doing. Each encounter will have its own different angle to deal with, like this encounter with Traitor Command that has everyone hallucinating beyond reason and sanity.

And all that’s before we get to how Abominable difficulty works. To make that happen, you just draw a second encounter card, take the twist from that, and apply it to the combat. In the example we see here, not only is everyone on hallucinogens, they’re also dealing with the fact that their inspiration rolls are tied to the wounds value on a single target they’ve killed, rather than getting to pool the ‘slain wounds value’ together for an easier time.

Of course you’ll see there are still more monsters in every fight. To help gamers supplement their forces, the enemy miniatures from both the core set and Escalation have been made available in two different boxes so you can get your hands on the most traitorous minis this side of Vigilus.

All of this is up for pre-order this coming weekend, so stay tuned for more!
