Welcome to another “This Week in 40K Podcasting,”  Here is this week’s top 5!

Highlights:  This week Geoff is off and Justin has bumped up to the second chair for the week.  They opened up the show with a little bit of an introduction to Justin and his gamer credentials.  They moved on to the ‘Work Bench’ to discuss what they have been up to lately in the hobby and gaming.  This included some of their thoughts on the new Space Marines and how some units have improved, like Legion of the Damned.  Next up was the main topic for the show, the ‘Double Force Organization Chart’ for games 2000 points or more.  They first cover that actual rule within the rulebook, which allows for the spilt force org plus additional forces for your allied detachment, and how the rule is often mistaken.  They then moved on to discuss what they found when building lists for a game of 2500 points and what this allowed them to do.  This included some discussion about the game itself and what they were able to learn from a game that size.  Next, the studio was invaded by the Overlords when Jon and Jason from the Overlords podcast visited with Carl!  They discussed first some of the differences between gaming in London as opposed to gaming here in the US.  This included gaming limits on space to play, clubs, and the games that they played when they all got together at Carl’s place.  They also discussed the guy’s thoughts on US game stores versus what they see on a regular basis in the UK.

Opinion:  This was really an interesting show, with a topic most people don’t touch:  The Double Force Org!  I, for one, have yet to play a single game with a double Force Org.  So this was really a great refresher on the rules around it and how to do it properly.  Easily my favorite for the week, nice work guys!

Highlights:  This week the boys hit us with another 4+ hour show, dedicated to Heat 1 of the UK Grand Tournament!  They opened up the show with Franco and an interview he had with Dave, BJ, and Jon Stewart to discuss their YouTube Channel and their plans for more video Battle Reports and much more.  Then, it was on to the bulk of the show, the Heat 1 GT coverage where Franco, Dave, and Josh sat down to discuss the big event.  They opened up by discussing how the event was structured with 6 rounds, the 1650 point limit, the scoring system, and more.  They moved on to discuss their first round, which included a review of the lists that they brought, their opponent’s army, the mission, and a detailed account of the game and its outcome.  When available, the guys had an interview with their opponent from that round where they briefly discussed the game.  They continued this coverage throughout all six rounds of the event, and at the end they had an overview on their feeling about the event, their performance and where they finished off, and what they would change on the lists they took.  This included a controversial end to the top table event and their feelings on this.

Opinion:  I cannot say it enough, I love these shows.  This one is a full tournament overview with every detail expressed and dripping with great tips and tactics.  I have always found little nuggets of knowledge in these and truly enjoy them.  For those like myself, this one is a good one!

Preferred Enemies – Episode 61 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  This week the guys are tackling the Assault Phase in 6th Edition.  They opened up the show with a little news, which included the updated Sisters of Battle digital codex, before moving on to the main topic for the show, the Assault Phase in 6th Edition.  They start off with a quick definition of the armies that lean more on assault then shooting, like Tyranids, Orks, Black Templar, and more.  They moved on to how the Assault rules have changed in 6th, starting with random charge lengths, and moving on to Overwatch and how to use those rules to your advantage.  This moved into a great conversation about how to tactically use your assault units in this era of a shooting edition.  This also discussed how the Transport rules changing also changed how the assault phase works, including the 6” disembarking rule.  They then discussed how the rules for assaults out of reserves or from deep strike have changed, how Flyers have also changed the face of the game, how Monstrous Creatures work in combat now, and how the power weapon rule change has affected the assault phase.  They then discussed the Challenge mechanic, some of the nebulous rules around it, and how some characters cannot hold up to a challenge versus a MC or other special characters.  They summed up their thought on the subject before topping off the show with their hobby updates.

Opinion:  This was a really interest show this week, looking at how the assault phase has changed with 6thEdition.  I really liked hearing what major differences there were between 5th and 6th, and this was a pretty compressive look at the whole phase top to bottom.  I really enjoyed it.

Highlights:  The boys are back and reflecting on 6th Edition over the last year or so.  The boys opened up the show with ‘The Round Up’ where they discussed what they have been up too lately in gaming and the hobby.  Next, the boys moved on to their News segment where they discussed the recent Space Marine release, one-click bundles, and the Astartes Ultra!  They also touched on some new stuff from Forgeworld, the Black Library, and the latest in the rumor mill.  They moved on to a segment titled ‘Hopes and Fears’, which was a look back at 6thEdition.    They looked back at the when 6thEdition was about to release and what they were hoping for and fearing out of the edition at the time.  This included things like wonky reserve rolls, random charge distances, premeasuring, percentage based force org chart, allies, and much, much more!  Next, the guys had their famous ‘Battle Report’ in which they dramatized an epic battle between the Eldar and Tyranids in a sort of rematch.  The guys described the lists, the deployment, the mission, and terrain layout before their dramatization of the battle itself.  They closed out by discussing the result of the game and what could have been changed.  The guys closed out the show with a review of the Codex Tau Supplement: Farsight Enclaves!  They discuss the contents of the book, mostly background storyline on Farsight, and the very thing rules found in this book.  They covered the new rules for the Farsight bodyguard, how they can ally, the new Warlord Traits, and the cool new Signature System.

Opinion:  So very happy to see the guys back in a reasonable time frame!  This was a really good look at what they guys were hoping for before 6thand what came to pass.  I also really liked the look at the Farsight Enclaves supplement.  The gem, as usual, of course was the Battle Report.  Check this one out!

Imperial Vox Cast – 101 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  This week Dawson is back and he and Bill are discussing the all-important List-Building tactics in 6thEdition!  They opened up the show with what they have been doing lately in gaming and the hobby.  They also covered a game that they just finished playing where Bill took his Raven Guard against Dawson’s Dark Angels/ Space Wolves list.  Next, they moved on to the main topic of the show, List-Building tactics in 6thEdition.  They started off with the Troops choices and their main purpose in the game, holding and taking objectives.  They discuss the idea of MSU troop choices, more durable troop choices, and tactics to capturing and holding those objectives.  They move on to talk about different builds of lists that they have seen out there and what is currently working on the tournament circuit.  Next, the boys took some listener requests for competitive lists.  This included an Ork list, new Space Marines, Black Templars, and much more.  Then, Bill had an interview with Doug Johnson from Table War and they discussed the game that they recently played together.  They covered the lists that they ran, some of their tactics going in, and the game itself including the outcome.

Opinion:  This was a pretty good show, although I found myself wanting a little more.  They started off great but trailed off at the end.  With the topic, I was hoping the guys would have gone more in-depth with their thought processes on how to build a competitive list.  I did like the list building segment though, so it sort of made up for it.  Check it out and decide for yourself.
