This Week in 40K Podcasting – 09/06/2013 – 09/12/2013
Highlights: This is the 100thEpisode of Imperial Vox Cast and it is a reunion show where a lot of the previous hosts all got back together to record. This included Bill, Dawson, Tor, Silas, and Mike from the first few episodes of the show! They opened up the show with some discussion about what they all have been up to lately, including games played and hobby completed. This included a few ‘other’ games that they have tried and been playing. They moved on to a great discussion about how to get into this game of 40K and what to get, the 40K RPGs, X-Wing, and more. They then moved on to a topic of what makes a game, table top or otherwise, a good game to play? It boils down to having good people to play against/with and recognize what is and is not fun to do. They also discussed painting models, some tips on how to do it and mostly places to find some useful videos and instructions on how to improve your painting skills. They hit on how to continue to play the game with the rising prices and more. They closed out the show with a Q&A segment from their Facebook fans who wrote it questions for all of the older hosts.
Opinion: Imperial Vox Cast, in my opinion, is one of the founding fathers of the 40K podcast world. I wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate this crowning achievement of their 100 great episodes. This podcast, chronologically, has been around since almost the beginning and it has been a pure joy listening to over the last 4+ years I can tell you. They started off as being the tournament focused podcast, even predating the 11thand while they have shifted their direction a bit over the years, they still have maintained the highest level of quality and content. This show is one of my staples; I never miss an episode and always come away further educated on the game after. And for this episode, it was a great blast from the past to have all of the hosts on, I really enjoyed it. Thank you guys, it has been a pleasure and I look forward to 100 more!
Highlights: This week’s show represents the end of an era, as this was the final episode of Deepstrike Radio! For the record, it’s Chase’s fault due to work obligations. They opened up the show with a discussion about why the show is ending after three years and what we can look forward to in the future with a new show. They decided to close out the show with the ‘Librarius’ topic they have teased us about for some time now, and that is the mysteries of the Emperor of Mankind! They discuss who he is and why he is such a big deal in the 40K universe. They move on to discuss the theories behind his origins and where in the world this super being came from and debate which one they believe the most. They then moved on to the early history of the Emperor and what roles he might have had in our history and some of his great accomplishments like defeating the Void Dragon and more. They moved on to the Dark Age of Technology and the Emperor’s rise during that time, and the fall of mankind at that time, and some of the time line inconsistencies with mankind’s and that of the Eldar’s early history. They moved on to the beginnings of the Crusades and the Emperor’s goal to rebuild the empire of man, stamp out the gods of Chaos, and all religion to protect mankind. The Emperor moved on to create the Thunder Warriors and their early victories and flaws, and how this lead to the creation of the Primarchs, the Primarchs being spread throughout the galaxy, and the very first Astartes! Then then debated how and why the Emperor created the Primarchs in the first place. They then moved on to discuss the Great Crusade; its beginnings with the treaty with Mars and the Astronomicon to the Imperial Truth, the rediscovery of the Primarchs and the seeds of Hersey. They then moved on to a very brief summary of the Horus Hersey, how it plunged the galaxy back into total war, and how it claimed the life of Horus and in a way, the Emperor himself. They close out the segment with their final thoughts on the Emperor and the state of his welfare. They then closed out the show with some final words for the fans and some of their favorite outtakes from the show.
Opinion: I go from great jubilation for one show and their accomplishments, to a great depression over the loss of another. I was very shocked to learn that Deepstrike Radio was ending their show. I started listening to this show from the beginning, and I have seen it change from a show all about college humor 40K, to my home for 40K lure and storyline. I really felt that this show found its niche when they found a direction, and that was to educated the unwashed sods like myself who didn’t know nearly enough about the fluff of this game as they could. I found myself leaning on this show to learn more about the 40K universe; they always did an outstanding job and I for one will truly miss this show. And while I know some of the cast will return soon, this show in its format will be sorely missed on my podcast rotation. Thanks guys, for everything, and best of luck to all.
Opinion: This week’s show was just outstanding! I had high hopes for Alex’s performance prior to the Nova Open and I was very excited to hear from him after seeing how well he had done there. The interview with Mike Marlow was also quite interesting as well. It would normally have found a spot on top of my list if not for two historic events this week so I cannot recommend this one highly enough. Great job guys!
Highlights: This week the boys are back from the Nova Open and discussing all that happened there. They opened up the show with ‘This Week in Gaming’ where they discussed the games they were playing. This was all about the Nova Open! The boys are joined by Steve, another Nova Open participant and they all discussed the games that they played at the big event! They discussed a little about the Space Marine Codex and some of the filth they are already thinking about how to use this book. They then moved on to discuss the Nova Open 2013! They boys discussed how the meta played out at the event, what did well and what did not, and how dominate the ‘O’Vesa Deathstar’ was at this year’s event. Next the boys gave a few brief look at their Invitational games and their GT experience. They also discussed the event overall, some things they would have changed, such as terrain, and their final thoughts on this great event. DJ closed out the show with another ‘Simhammer’ segment, and this week he focused on the Dark Eldar Mandrakes and how they stack up to units like Tactical Marines, Grey Hunters, and more.
Opinion: First and foremost, Happy Birthday to Neil who took 4th Place at this year’s Nova Open! The conversation about the new Space Marine Codex was interesting and all, and I look forward to the show’s full review of the new Codex. However the gem of this one was easily the coverage of the Nova Open. So many players at the event shared their stories of how they did, so much in tactics I couldn’t get enough. A great show as always guys!
Opinion: Once a again the Jaded Gamercast boys find their way into my top 5. This time with a great look at the new Space Marine Codex! While they were not the first, the boys did a really great job reviewing the codex. They hit from top to bottom on all of the new rules, Traits, wargear, and more. A great look at the new book, and a great show!
