AoS: Ranking the Mortarchs

The armies of Nagash have more and more mortarches every day, it seems, so let’s all sit down and rank them to figure out who’s Best.

At the head of the armies of Death are Nagash’s Fab Five, the Mortarchs, individuals who have distinguished themselves in some way in the eyes of the Big Bone Daddy. But one must ask, which of these mighty generals is the best? Well worry not because I’ve taken the liberty of compiling a rating system. Here’s my ranking of the Mortarchs from best to worst.

#5: Lady Olynder

Sitting at the low end of the pack is the Nighthaunt Queen herself, Olynder. While she is a powerful mage, and can throw out some pretty solid debuffs, she doesn’t have enough real punch to be much of a contender with the other four. Plus, she’s fragile, and doesn’t have the healing abilities of her comrades in arms.

#4: Mannfred

Lord of the Legion of Night, Mannfred was once the most powerful vampire lord in the world, even able to unseat Warhammer Dracula. However, his new form leaves a bit to be desired, as he lacks the magical prowess of Arkhan, the support power of Neferata, and the raw might of Katakros. He’s a solid midline contender with plenty of punch, but he still falls just a little short of his fellows.

#3: Neferata

As the first vampire ever, one would expect that Neferata brings a lot to the table, and she certainly does. With a fairly potent debuff ability, a very powerful buff spell in Dark Mist, and solid attacks on her profile including one that can kill high wound enemies outright, she is certainly a heck of a contender. She’s not quite as powerful as my top two, but she brings enough to the table to keep her placed solidly in the middle.

#2: Katakros

The newest Mortarch to grace the battlefield and leader of Nagash’s ultimate weapon, Katakros is an absolute melee monster. Playing a bit like a boss in a video game, he gets more personally powerful as his minions die off, and until they do he has a wide range of incredible abilities. He can buff his fellow Bonereapers, heal, and dish out damage in short order. The only reason he falls below Arkhan is his lack of spellcasting, but he more than makes up for it with a nasty amount of other utility.

#1: Arkhan

Nagash’s OG right hand man and one of the most powerful spellcasters in his service, Arkhan the Black has been wrecking the Realms since the time of legends. He can heal better than any of his fellows, can cast spells with enough power to make a Lord of Change blush, and was responsible for helping Nagash build his Ossiarch army. Lorewise, Arkhan has always been one of my favorite characters, and bunkered in a Petrifex Elite army he can make them all immovable objects by sheer proximity. While Katakros may have him in the combat phase, Arkhan reigns supreme everywhere else, and so he squeezes into my top spot.

Which Mortarch is your favorite?
