Fantasy Flight’s Star Wars Games Are Going Strong
Let’s take a look at the state of some of FFG’s Star Wars games.
Over the past few months there has been some worry about the future of Star Wars games at FFG. The completion of Destiny and Imperial Assault, and news that FFG was shuttering it’s RPG department had people worried. However recent news over the past few weeks has given us a new hope and things seem like they will be OK. Let us take a look.
The Fate of the Jedi
The past few months have been times of uncertainty for fans of FFG’s Star Wars products, with the future seemingly clouded by the dark side. First we had the completion of and ending of both Imperial Assault and Destiny, two very different games but both Star Wars. This was shortly followed by news of FFG shutting some departments down and doing some reorganizing. That was in turn quickly followed by news that FFG was shutting down its whole RPG department. All of this pointed for trouble for Star Wars games, with two already ended and the RPG seemingly about to come to an end. Players and fans wondered about the remaining games, and pointed to a slow release schedule for Armada. Some claimed a slow down of releases for X-Wing as signs that they too where going away. The future seemed dire.
The Empire Strikes Back
After months of dire portents the last couple of weeks have brought us welcome news. Last week at GAMA FFG announced that their RPG titles were not being ended but simply moved to a new imprint. The Star Wars RPG was specifically mentioned as one of the continuing RPGs so it seems like Jedi will in fact return in the future. In additional welcome news, FFG also confirmed at GAMA that we would get a proper attack of the clones, with Armada getting the promised Clones Wars expansions sometime this year.
Though it was later admitted that given the state of the world things could always be delayed. This news from GAMA was extremely welcome as the RPGs and Armada seemed the most vulnerable game systems and rumors of both being cut had abounded. While the future of course is always in motion it seems that these games are safe for now.
The Other FFG Games
With the two vulnerable games official safe for now we can certainly rest easy when it comes to the other FFG tabletop games. Legion is a growing hit in the community and has a very robust release schedule. It’s a relatively new and growing game and FFG has sunk a lot of time and money into developing it. Given the power of the Star Wars brand and how well received the game has been I don’t see it going anywhere. Since FFG is going to keep making Star Wars games it seems clear they will keep making Legion for the foreseeable future.
X-Wing of course is the bread and butter of the FFG Star Wars games, and arguably the largest hit the company has had. It has had ups and downs, but remains in a good place, and with a slew of new movies, shows and books having come out or coming out there is going to be plenty to mine for it. Other games, such as the Outer Rim or Rebellion are harder to say, these don’t get the regular support of a board game and will likely continue to get reprints as demanded. The world is of course not in a great place right now, and the future is uncertain. Many companies are going to be hurting and things could always change, but it seems like for now at least the threat of FFG’s Star Wars games going away was a phantom menace.
