Brent: The Upcoming 40K 6th Ed. Wordiness Virus
Ah, another edition of Warhammer 40K falls by the wayside as the gaming community waits breathlessly for its replacement. Out with the old, in with the new – and hopefully better.
I remember doing this dance several times; Rouge Trader to 2nd, 2nd Edition to 3rd, and so on. As I recall, each of these changes is preceded by a ritual of sorts. Like so: interest in the old edition plummets. People break out the ‘fantasy-themed-game-of-choice‘ for awhile and things go along quite strongly there – until the day the new edition of Warhammer 40K hits the shelves.
And that’s it, folks! Push aside the other crap, ’cause all you’ll do is play 40K and all you’ll read is stuff written by dudes who play 40K.
Ah! Let’s hit the brakes and reexamine a theme: All you’ll read is stuff written by dudes who write about 40K! Why? Because the Blogosphere is well and truly established.
And the Mob must be fed, and entertained.
The question that prompted this examination of Edition History and a Digital Era is simple: how soon will it be before any of this upcoming crap will be worth reading?
Folks, I did something here I never thought myself capable of… cut out 2/3’rds of the original article, boiling it down the question to its essence. The discussion point is simple, really, and highlighted above.
The game will change, and I think there will be plenty of people ready to stand in line to crap all over it. But sometimes change is good, and 5th certainly reached the end of its allotted lifespan.
Rest in peace. Long live the King!
So, care to make any predictions? Feel free to go after all of us – the institution of wordiness – of which I am a part – could use a body blow or two.
Care to say why? 🙂
