This Week in 40K Podcasting – 3/16/2012 – 3/22/2012
Welcome to another “This Week in 40K Podcasting,”
Here is this week’s top 5!
The Heroic 28s – Episode 30 ***Explicit***
Highlights: This week the guys introduce a new cast member, and open up the show going over ‘Fu Manchu’s’ gaming history. This then moved on to what they have been doing lately in the hobby and gaming. Next, the guys cover the news, from local news to the latest GW releases. Then, Cory goes over what playing his Eldar has taught him about the game of 40K, and how much this Codex needs an update. ‘Fu Manchu’ also chimes in with what playing the Tau has taught him about the 5th edition game. Next, they guys move on to a conversation about the impending 6th edition to the game, what did 5th Edition fix, and what needs fixed in 5th Edition going into 6th? Next up, with this year’s tournament circuit just getting started, the boys open up a new segment where their break down top tier lists and give out tactics on how to kill them. This week the guys cover Space Wolves Razorback Spam lists, the three Thunderwolf Lords list, and Grey Hunter Spam list and what each army can do against them. To close out the show, ‘Chemdog Cory’ takes the reins in a Black Library book review where he discusses ‘Deliverance Lost’ by Gav Thorpe and ‘Know No Fear’ by Dan Abnett.
Opinion: This show had two really high points for me this week. First, the inadvertent new segment of the cast talking about ‘less than top tier’ armies and what they have learned from them has really been quite interesting. Second is the new segment where they break down the top tier army and discuss tactics for beating it. Both were full of get 40K knowledge and a wealth of tactics. My top pick for the week! Great Show!
Highlights: This week the cast and crew are back to full strength, and they open up the show with the news. There is not much from GW, but Forgeworld and Black Library have been quite active. Next, the guys move on to local news and what they have been up to lately in gaming and the hobby. Then in ‘Bid Up IC’, Karl take the lead in a discussion about Mad Doc Grotsnik. He goes over the special abilities of this special character and the staff bid on having them in their Codices. The Old Mad Doc was not well received. Karl also talked about his gaming club the ‘Tempest Fugitives’. They close out the show with a great segment, Dean is back with ‘Dean’s Dimension’ and he and Steve take a good long look at the current backstory of the Necrons!
Opinion: As usual, the Overlords turn in a top-notch show this week, which included a return to ‘Dean’s Dimension’. Necrons were my first love of 40K and hearing Dean and Steve’s evaluation of the new back story was just outstanding. I had to listen to it twice it was so good! Awesome guys!
Highlights: This week, the guys are joined by Dave for the first time and they open up the show with what they have been doing on their long break. Next, in ‘This Random Time Period in 40K’, the boys talk about the news that was in the last four weeks in the hobby from GW, Forgeworld, Black Library, and more! Then it was back to the awesome battle reports the guys produce, and this week was their ‘Blind Fight’ report. Each player was given an army they were not familiar with, in a 1000 point Daemons vs Orks battle. They open up with the particulars of the game, the table, the mission, and the lists. They then move on to a dramatization of this epic battle, followed up by a review of the overall game. Then, in a new segment called Campaign Diem, and they talk about their Escalation League at their local store. ‘Rules of Engagement’ closes out the show this week and cover the ‘And They Shall Know No Fear’ rules from most Space Marine Codices.
Opinion: So good to have these guys back this week and congratulation to Rich on his recent nuptials. Though the news was a bit behind, this due to their extended break, the highlight to this week’s show is their signature Battle Report. Each time they do one of these they are getting better and more interesting. If they were to do a campaign, and follow the story of some characters over a few reports, it would rival some of the Black Library stuff. Great work guys!
The 11th Company – Episode 111
Highlights: This week Eric from the Tactical Terrain segment joins the crew as a guest host. They open up the show with ‘This Week in Gaming’ where they discuss the game they have been playing lately. This included an interesting conversation about Kill Points in 5th Edition. Next, in ‘Pat Corner’, Pat has an interview with Gordon (aka Darklink) and they discuss, in detail, his unusual Grey Knight list. Next, Pat talked to Gareth from the blog GDMNW and they talked about the Blood Angels list he is bringing to the Nova Open this year. They also hit on his blog and its content. Next, in the ‘Community’ segment, Pat talks to Reese from Frontline Gaming and they talk about KingdomCon, Joe from the Screaming Heretic podcast, and MarkDawg from the Overlords. Next, Eric leads a discussion about Sportsmanship, its importance at an event and some ideas on how to score it at a tournament. To close out the show, Pat and Pidge from the blog ‘Three Color Minimum’ do a Black Library book review of ‘Know No Fear’
Opinion: This week had a lot of great discussions that I really enjoyed. Kills Points has always been a sore spot for me since the onset of 5th Edition, as it never made much sense to me. To hear some of their ideas of how to better score it was helpful. However, the better conversation was found in the Sportsmanship section, I really think that despite being more on the competitive edge of the game, the guys also understand that it is a game and that proper behavior at the table is a must and should be scored at events.
40K UK – Episode 48 ***Explicit***
Highlights: After some UK GT announcements, the show opens up with ‘Operation Codex’ and this time around the cover the Dark Eldar Heavy Support choices. They go in-depth in their evaluation of the Talos Pain Engine, the Ravager, and the Razorwing Jetfighter. Next, in the GT Update, the boys sum up where there are in the process and some of the last minute things they have added to the weekend’s events. Next, Gary had an interview with Mike Marlow and they discuss his tournament caliber Dark Eldar list and how he uses it. To close out the show, the boys had their fifth installment of ‘The Match Live’ and this week they pit Rob Madeley and his Necrons versus Alex West and his Space Wolves army. They run down their list, and then move on to a turn-by-turn review of the game.
Opinion: Another tactic filled show, my version of Monday Morning coffee I could not start the week without! The full run down of the Dark Eldar heavy support had some finer points I had not heard before, and will be quite useful! And ‘The Match Live’ was just a lot of fun to hear! Good Show!
