This Week in 40K Podcasting – 2/24/2012 – 3/01/2012
Welcome to another This Week in 40K Podcasting!
Here is this week’s top 5!
The Independent Characters – Episode 48
Highlights: This week’s episode is dedicated mostly to Imperial Armor 03: The Taros Campaign! The guys open up the show with some quick announcements before moving on to the new GW releases for the Space Wolves and the Tyranids (finally!) and some Forgeworld releases. They then move on to ‘the Workbench’ where the guys cover what they have been doing lately in gaming and the hobby. This included their hobby commitments for the next two weeks and a lot of games played and tournaments run/played in! After a break, the boys dig into Imperial Armor 3: The Taros Campaign and the give their full review of the look and feel of the book itself first, being one of the largest Imperial Armors books released. They then move on to a summary of the story behind this book, who the major players are and which armies are involved. They talk about the small mining planet of Taros that is on the border of Tau space and of interest to them for the resources there. They give the details of how the hostilities started, and how it escalated into a full scale conflict, with assassination attempts and suicide missions between the Tau and the Imperium. In the next segment, the guys finish off the story of the final battle of the campaign and the very interesting ending of this whole story. They then go on to talk about some of the more interesting models introduced by this book, their special rules, and some of the special characters also added by this book. They then give the book their overall value and ‘bang for your buck’, as it is a $90 book.
Opinion: I am always a huge fan of the Independent Character’s reviews of the Imperial Armor books, and this one was just as awesome! Despite being one of the older IA books out there, and being a bit out of date, this was an exceptional podcast, almost completely dedicate to the story behind the book. I entirely enjoyed this one, and it is my top pick for the week! Check it out!
The 11th Company – Episode 108
Highlights: This week is another monster of a show, clocking in at over four and a half hours of awesome 40K content! The guys are joined by Blackmoor once again for ‘This Week in Gaming’ where they talk about the games they have been playing lately. This included a short Necron evaluation by Neil. Next, in ‘Pat’s Corner’, Pat is back with part two of his interview with Stelek from ‘Yes the Truth Hurts’ and they were talking about terrain at a tournament. Pat also talked to Edwin from the blog ‘Lesser of All Evils’ and they discussed his Necron tactics to modify the battlefield. Next, Eric from the ‘Tactical Terrain’ segment does a live report from the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre RTT, and he talks to his opponents after each game. Next, in the community segment, Pat talks to Matt Weeks from Adepticon (celebrating 10 years!), Mike Brandt from the NOVA Open, Nick ‘Darkwynn’ Rose from WargamesCon, and much, much more! To close out the show, the guys are back to their ‘Codex Countdowns’ and this week they give their full review of Codex Eldar. Blackmoor joins the crew with their complete rundown of the current Eldar tactics and strategies. They review of each and every unit in the codex and an evaluation of their place in the modern 5th edition game, focusing mostly on the Foot ‘Dar list.
Opinion: I really liked this week’s show and the return to the Codex Countdown has been enlightening to me. It is interesting to see how the armies have changed in the scope of competitiveness since they were last reviewed. Also, I think Pat nailed an excellent interview with Stelek on a fascinating topic. The report from the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre was great as well, and Eric has really become a great part of the show.
Highlights: This week, Ciaran takes the reins and hosts this cast-light show! Steve makes his return to the show, and the boys open up with some gaming news, including tournament and podcast announcements and GW Necron and Tyranid releases. Next up the boys cover their local Overlords news and contest announcements before moving on to what they have been doing in the hobby and gaming. Next up the boys did a review of Pig Iron’s System Troopers kit that could be run as either Scouts, IG Storm troopers, or more. Then, in ‘Bid Up IC’, Dagmire pitches Saint Celestine to the crew and he runs down all of her gear and awesome special rules. The guys then bid (in points) to have her in their armies. They close out the show with ‘Ciaran’s Meatlocker’, where they brought up the interesting topic of close combat with the Imperial Guard army. They explore the options they have in their codex and some upgrades to make them more apt in the assault phase.
Opinion: I was really glad to see Ciaran take the lead on this week’s show and my man Steve back on the air! And how could forget the legendary Dagmire in studio! The gem to this week’s show was easily the ‘Meatlocker’ segment with a topic that most people would never consider. They reviewed some units from the IG codex that we normally do not hear from in this mech heavy era of the game.
The Heroic 28s – Episode 29 ***Explicit***
Highlights: This week the guys open up their show with some announcements and what they have been doing in the hobby and gaming the past two weeks. They move on to talk about the Space Wolf and Tyranid releases from Games Workshop. Next, the guys talk about their recent attendance at the 1500 point Astronomicon Tournament. They go over the lists that they took to the event, and briefly go over each of the six games that they played. Sandman Mike took Best Overall and was awarded a trophy! Next, Cowboy Kenny leads a discussion about how bad he feels the Tyranids are right now in the current game and why he will be shelving his army until either 6th Edition or a new codex. This then moves onto a discussion about what he has learned about the game of 40K thanks to the Tyranids. Next the guys talk about ‘all-foot’ armies and what armies can do it well. They also hit on some of the tactics and strategies to making them competitive. To close out the show, the guys give their hobby goals for the next two week.
Opinion: This show really tugged at my heartstring a bit as Kenny talked about his beloved Tyranid army. I am with you man, we all want that book to just go away and make our favorite army competitive once again! I also liked the spin the guys put on it by talking about some positives to playing a less-then-top tier army and what they learned about the game thanks to the Tyranid Codex.
40K UK – Episode 45 ***Explicit***
Highlights: This week’s show is almost completely dedicated to the ‘Joy Toys Outing’ tournament the cast attended. The boys open up the show with an overall review of the event itself. Only Dave and Nathan could attend and they go into the details of this 2000 point Nova Open style tournament. They then discuss the lists that they took to this event, Dave took his Space Wolves and Nathan took his Dark Eldar. Next, they talk about their round one game and its results. Dave also had an interview with his first round opponent, Bennet. The boy then move on to talk about their round 2 and 3 games: They talk about the opponents that they faced and how well they did in each game. Dave then had an interview with his third round opponent, who handed Dave a loss with his Ork army. The guys then break up the tournament report with ‘The Shoutout’ where they give some updates on the quickly upcoming UK GT! To close out the show, they get back to the tournament report. Day two was a bit of a debacle as the boys went out drinking the night before and Dave never showed for the day and Nathan was in pretty bad shape.
Opinion: As with the rest of their tournament overview shows, this was a pretty good review of their most recent tournament appearance, well the first day anyway. I have to say I was a little disappointed with the lack of showing on day two of the event. So the first part of the show was full of great tactical discussion and insight, the second half, not so much.
