AoS: Idoneth Deepkin Updates – You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Tote
There’s blood in the water, and the sharks are definitely coming… Let’s dive into the latest Deepkin updates from the Morathi book.
With the recent updates from Broken Realms: Morathi, the fearsome Idoneth Deepkin have gained a new lease on life in the form of a ton of updates. New model rules, a new battalion, and the introduction of mount traits are bringing the vicious fishes back in a big way. As a big fan of Akhelians and Allopexes, I was super excited to see their specific updates, so here are my thoughts on the new Allopex warscroll, the Deepmare mount traits, and the new battalion.
Akhelian Kings
Akhelian Kings are powerful heroes in their own right, and the Deepmare mounts they ride into battle are certainly no slouch. With the new mount traits, you can make the grumpy hippocampus even stronger, more ferocious, or perhaps harder to bring down. The Swift-Finned Impaler trait makes the Deepmare’s horn a lot more dangerous on the charge. Should you roll a 6 on the die after you charge, the target unit takes d6 mortal wounds rather than d3, which would decimate a large chaff unit, a small elite unit, or even an opposing monster or hero, so it will definitely keep your opponent’s eyes on the hero.
The Savage Ferocity trait, my personal favorite, adds an extra attack to all of the Deepmare’s weapons, increasing its potential damage by three and of course allowing you to throw more mud at the proverbial wall. Should you want to air on the side of caution, however, the Voidchill Darkness trait could keep your Ocean Man safer in combat, as it subtracts 1 from hit rolls of all enemies within 3”. Yes, this does require you to get closer, but that’s where the King wants to be anyway, and could really take the sting out of enemy bruisers.
Allopex
The Allopex battleshark has gotten a lot scarier in its new update and has increased its worth a good bit. The Razorshell harpoon has gotten another attack with increased Rend, the Retarius Net Launcher now prevents pile-in moves against whoever it hits, and the Hooks and Blades and Ferocious Bite attacks have both increased. Yes, they did lose access to their Bladed Fins, which is a little unfortunate, but with the increased Bite attacks and the new Bloodthirsty Predator rule, their potential damage output has actually increased. Instead of increasing the charge range of the shark, the rule now increases the Bite attack if there are enemies nearby that have suffered damage or casualties. They are powerful damage dealers, which brings me to the new toothy battalion.
Bloodsuft Hunt
The Bloodsurf Hunt represents the personal hunters of King Volturnos, and they are very good at their job. It consists of an Akhelian King, which represents Sythus Nemmetar and as such MUST take the Lord of Sea and Storm command trait, and 1-2 Allopex units. While the Allopexes are wholly within 12” of Nemmetar, the Akhelians on their back fight harder and add 1 to hit with their Barbed Hooks and Blades attacks, and while they are within 3”, Nemmetar bounces wounds over to them on a 2+. This is a pretty good shock battalion, and if you don’t like the command trait, you can just NOT make Nemmetar your general, so consider using this as a late deployment drop to pick off rogue heroes or warmachines.
Will you be adding any of these to your Idoneth force?
