This is the second book in the Warhammer Heroes series I’ve gotten to read, and since it comes out next month, I figured that I should probably write a review…

Wulfrik is the work of C. L. Werner, the author of the “Brunner the Bounty Hunter” stories that I enjoyed quite a bit. Based on that, and the excellence of the other Warhammer Heroes book, Sword of Justice, I expected this to be a pretty good read.

It turns out, it was! While the story begins after Wulfrik has been cursed by the gods for his hubris, the events that follow turn out to be much more formative to his character. Wulfrik is given a surprising amount of background and depth, and his motivations are in some ways quite different from what you might expect of a Chaos Marauder.

In addition to the exploits of Wulfrik himself, the reader also gets a much closer look at what the society of the Norscans actually looks like. Which is pretty neat, as most of the time the only thing we get to see of them is the Marauders jumping of the boats and setting things on fire.

Though occasionally the story might seem like a more traditional heroic story of a man struggling against destiny, Werner doesn’t hesitate for a moment to remind you that your reading about a champion of Chaos, often quite brutally. The ending especially so. (And I don’t mean that in a bad way at all!)

Overall, Wulfrik is a good story written about Chaos by an author who really “Gets It”. I wish there was more I could tell you about the actual plot and events and such, but I can’t without spoiling it. If you want to read an excerpt, you can go here.

~ 4/5 After this and Sword of Justice, I am really looking forward to the rest of the Warhammer Heroes series. (especially Sword of Vengeance) I would also love to see a novel about Karl Franz himself! What character would you most like to see get a book?
