Memoir ’44 – A Great Game for Everyone this Holiday Season
It is holiday time and pre-COVID times that meant board games, family, and food!
This year will be different due to restrictions related to the pandemic. That said, there is no reason not to crack out a board game with the people you live with or to go back down memory lane.
In this post, we are going to look at one of my favorite board games for the holidays. This is Memoir 44, made by Days of Wonder and distributed by Asmodee. What do I find great about it? It is easy to teach, easy to play, and my hand-painted copy looks absolutely fantastic on the tabletop!!! On top of that, the game focuses on historical battles and gives players the feel of a fun but simple historical miniatures game. This is the type of game that you can introduce your non-miniatures gaming friends and family to and have a very fun experience.
Here is a picture of my collection.
If you want to play this with just friends and family, the Memoir 44 base game is enough. There is a lot of content in that box. If you and a friend really get into it, Days of Wonder has a ton of products that you can collect. What I own is just a small fraction of what is available for this elegant gaming system by Ricard Borg.

With that said, I want you to check out this narrated slide show video of my Memoir 44 Collection. In the video, I quickly review the game, discuss how I painted the figures, and provide a photographic showcase of nearly 40 images of the set. There is a lot of eye candy in this video if you like painted board games.
For those of you who like to jump around a bit, below are some time stamps that might help you find what you are after quicker.
- 1:08 Recommendation of what to get and what to get next
- 1:47 How to paint board game minis (specifically how I painted Memoir 44)
- 4:35 A quick discussion of the game
- 5:09 Eye candy of painted Memoir 44 minis
- 6:30 More eye candy
- 7:39 Who won the game in the pictures
If you haven’t watched the video above, be sure to give it a watch. Lots of awesome pictures in there!!!
Wrapping it up…
Thank you for joining me in this look at my Memoir 44 collection. This game is awesome. Whenever I want to play a historical game with a miniatures feel with my non-gaming (or non-miniatures gaming) friends, this is my go-to. It is a great gateway game with a miniatures gaming feel but done as a board game. And if you can’t gather folks around a table to play this holiday season, Days of Wonder offers a turn-based digital version you can get on Steam.
If you want a longer written account of the game, I have that too over on my personal site.
Until next time, Happy Gaming Everyone!!!
