D&D’s New Movie And Magic’s New Series Get Production Update
In the wake of WotC’s big promotion at Hasbro, we also got some news about the upcoming D&D and M:tG movies and TV series…
Against all odds, the Dungeons & Dragons movie is still happening, but that’s not the only WotC backed property in production at the moment. During Hasbro’s big investor event, where Wizards of the Coast’s new role at Hasbro was unveiled, we also got a glimpse at what Hasbro has in the works with EntertainmentOne, their media arm–including updates on both D&D and Magic: the Gathering’s respective movies and TV series’.
Dungeons & Dragons
Big things are afoot in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, at least as far as the movie is concerned. Not long after announcements that Chris Pine, Regé-Jean Page, Michelle Rodriguez, and Justice Smith have joined the movie, comes the news that principal photography is about to begin, and it looks like the D&D movie is going to have some gorgeous locales:
Feature film in partnership with Paramount Pictures is preparing to start principal photography in Ireland.
So, with the movie due out in a little less than 18 months, it’s good that they’re about to get started. But, the big screen isn’t the only place you’ll be seeing Dungeons & Dragons. Since you can’t have an entertainment franchise without making it the basis for a universe these days, Hasbro has plans to develop a whole new world of D&D “preimium television projects”.
Engaged several writers to develop premium television projects designed as a foundation for a new robust brand universe.
This is early news yet, but it looks like there’s more than just that live-action series in the works.
Magic: the Gathering
Magic, on the other hand, is also going strong. There’s been talk of a Magic: the Gathering movie since 2008, and it looked like that had stalled out as of 2019 when news of an MtG animated series came to light. Magic: the Gathering is sort of an inverse of D&D right now, as their “premium animated series” is in production at Netflix right now. No word on whether or not it’ll hit their original 2021 release goal yet.
But the Magic: the Gathering feature film is in development at Fox right now as well following a long and winding journey–will it ever escape development hell? If ever there was a time for that, it’s now. And if Hades has taught me anything, you only get stronger the more you try to get out.
Happy Adventuring!
