Strap into your wayback time machine. We’re taking a trip down memory lane to talk about the ‘Season of War’ and why we need another global campaign from Games Workshop.

Let’s take a step back a moment. It’s the Summer of 2016. Games Workshop had just wrapped up the Season of War event and it was (by most accounts) a smashing success.

Now, there were a few hiccups along the way – we did a solid post-mortem about the event and, looking back, I think it was a pretty fair assessment. For the most part the event ran smoothly. Reporting was good, there was a lot of community involvement, and (while there was some room for improvement) the overall event proved that it could be done. And besides, this wasn’t the first time GW had run a Global Campaign and it wasn’t the last time either.

So why haven’t we had another one?

A lot has happened since 2016. The technology has probably improved and the Warhammer Community site could easily* be the new hub for such an event. Warhammer: Age of Sigmar just launched a new edition and interest is high. I know that 2020 was a weird year and GW (along with lots of other companies) are still dealing with the fallout so maybe this was a project that got shoved to the back-burner. And, yes, get all those logistical nightmares sorted out first – but once the dust settles again, what’s stopping GW from launching another Global Campaign?

I genuinely hope that GW does launch another Global Campaign again. I also hope they take the lessons learned from the previous campaigns and design a system that is rewarding for all types of players from across all the different strata of the hobby. Plus, AoS have an evolving narrative. We see that with the new Seasons that the GHB brings. Why not have a global campaign where the players DO have a say in the outcome – by playing games and by building and painting models?  Seems like a winner to me!

What do you think? Would you be excited for another Global Campaign for Age of Sigmar?
