‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Confirmed by the Show’s Creator
The hit South Korean series will be back for more games! Squid Game season 2 has been officially confirmed by Dong-hyuk Hwang.
Squid Game season 2 is happening. If you haven’t watched the show, you really should. Season one of Squid Game is available on Netflix now.
The story focuses on a group of people invited to play games from their childhood in order to win $38.5 million. Sounds simple enough. But there’s a huge catch: not everyone will live.
All participants are in crippling debt to various agencies, businesses, and gangsters. They’ve got everything and nothing to lose. It’s a classic survival-of-the-fittest game. And the show is all about what this bunch of characters are willing to do to win– and to get out alive.
The Birth of Squid Game
The show’s creator, Dong-hyuk Hwang, started working on the story in 2008. It took him years to get it off the ground (and single episodes took months to shoot due to Hwang being exhausted). The show faced harsh criticism for its use of traditional Korean childhood games as a way to choose who lives and who dies. But time has changed.
His ideas struck a cord with a global audience. Squid Game is the most-watched series in any language on Netflix right now.
How Fan Reception Made Squid Game Season 2 Possible
Its massive success was a surprise to both Hwang and Netflix, so filming a sequel wasn’t scheduled. The writer/director has been asked by fans and press alike about if he’s going to continue the story. It looks like the answer is yes. Hwang recently told The Hollywood Reporter:
“Coming here and really seeing how well-received the show is and how much the fans want it, I have been getting the same question by the press as well.
“I do have a basic storyline for season two — it’s all in my head — and I am currently in the brainstorming stage. It will happen, someday, but as for when I cannot tell you the details. What I can say is that Gi-hun is going to be back, and he will do something for the world.”
Based on the success of the show, Netflix is certainly up for another season. No dates have been set as there’s a lot of work to be done. But fans can rest easy that they’ll get a proper ending.
