D&D: Five Spells For Escalating That Snowball Fight
Because it’s not D&D if you aren’t escalating things to the point where someone is entombed in a block of ice.
Winter is here, and while that waning might be ominous for the denizens of Westeros and parts beyond, it means that it’s time to put on your coziest sweater, your heaviest jacket, and frolic in the snow. Even Texas gets snow now, apparently. So while I stare off into the middle distance, hoping that anyone in power has taken any steps to ensure that Texas’ power grid doesn’t pull a repeat of earlier this year (they haven’t), let’s take a look at five spells perfect for snowy weather.
Snilloc’s Snowball Swarm

This is perhaps the most obvious choice. And it’s one of the few times players might actually cast the spell. Snilloc’s Snowball Swarm catches a lot of flak because it has the misfortune of not being fireball, but if you want to absolutely buffet someone with magical snowballs–or multiple someones in a very small radius, this spell is a power move.
Ray of Frost
A less powerful icy attack, but nevertheless, with its ability to slow a target, it lets you either outrange them, or position yourself for the perfect snowball counterattack. Plus it’s a literal freeze ray, and if that isn’t escalation, I don’t know what is.
Otiluke’s Freezing Sphere
Well okay, maybe this is escalation. We’re once more back to a snow ball (well it’s more of an ice sphere) that you can hang on to as long as you want. When you hit someone with it, everyone in a 60-foot radius sphere is hit with a blast of cold, people in water are frozen within it. It’s the ultimate snowball.
Cone of Cold
But why limit yourself to a snow ball when you could have a snow cone instead. Cone of Cold is the ultimate power move when you want to escalate things. Blast creatures with icy cold, anyone succumbing to its powers becomes a frozen statue. What more could you want?
Tomb of Levistus
Not technically a spell per se, but some times you need a good defense. And with Tomb of Levistus you can become a snow/iceman and gain an incredible amount of resilience for a turn–and all you have to do is encase yourself in a tomb of ice.
Happy Adventuring!
