Star Wars: Halcyon Starcruiser First Looks Are In
Early looks at the Halcyon Starcruiser are out! But does the experience look like it will be worth the price tag?
This week, dozens of writers and journalists far luckier than myself flooded the internet with their reviews and thoughts about the Disney’s Galactic Starcruiser. And I, of course, had to know what they thought. As far as vacations go, it looks like a one-of-a-kind experience. But that price tag has me wondering if my family of three can really justify the cost. Should we average Joes shave up our credits for a trip on the Halcyon Starcruiser?
The Light Side
A few weeks back, sneak-peak videos of the Starcruiser had people criticizing how bad it looked. And just about every reviewer says that it looks good. Perhaps too good. But we’ll get to that later. Polished, aesthetic, and immersive to a fault, if you’re worried about the Halcyon looking cheesy, you can put those concerns to bed.
Everything is designed to make you feel like you’re actually in the galaxy far far away. From the Aurebesh and Basic (English) signs, to the aesthetic take on their food stuffs, to the characters that the cast members stay in the entire time to the costumes that you’re encouraged to wear, you’re meant to feel like you’re in space. Does this mean there are no windows? Yes. But there is apparently a “Climate Simulator” or an outdoor courtyard area. Because we’re only slightly more complex than house plants and need sunlight.
All in all, it looks like “quality” and “immersive” were the words of the day, and Disney nailed it on the Halcyon Starcruiser. I haven’t found a single bad word about the food, state of the ship, plots, or cast members. And that’s great because if you’re going, you’ll be paying at least $5,000 for the experience.
The Dark Side
I can’t help but feel like Disney forgot who the good guys are in Star Wars with this one. The Halycon is supposed to show us how the ‘other half’ of the galaxy lives. It’s supposed to feel like the luxury yachts of crime lords of the hall of Canto Bight. But those were never supposed to be emulated parts of the story. Those aren’t he good guys. We’re meant to side with the rebels in the junky light freighters, not the spice movers.
It’s also worth keeping in mind, that though everyone on the Halcyon is a character who is choosing their side and involved in the adventure, cast members are the main characters and paying guests are side characters. Which makes sense. It would be madness if we had the ability to make major changes or change the script. But that realization was immediately disappointing to me for some reason.
All in all…
…Not gunna lie, I still want to check out the Halcyon Starcruiser for myself. It reminds me of my days of attending anime conventions to spend the entire weekend at the con LARP. And honestly, those are still some cherished memories years and years later. Will I fall into the $6,000 necessary to take my family any time soon? Probably not. But until then I can think on the persona I’ll play as. My husband has already claimed Tryst Valentine, and if that’s a reference you got we should coordinate Halcyon cruises.
Do you plan on experiencing the Halcyon Starcruiser for yourself one day? Would you be resistance, first order, smuggler, or try to play both sides? What part of the experience do you most want to see for yourself? Let us know in the comments!
