WotC previewed just a little bit more of the hidden depths in Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep.

As the March 15th release date for Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep draws closer, Wizards of the Coast has started showing off more and more of the upcoming adventure. In an exclusive reveal to Comicbook.com, WotC’s Lead Story Designer, Chris Perkins, showcased some of the new creatures and features of Netherdeep.

The whole interview is a fascinating look at the adventure. You can get a sense of what makes this one different. You can take a look at some of the new monsters. And, while there are spoilers, you can get an idea of some of what you’ll face.

Netherdeep – Monsters and Mayhem in the Depths

One of the big things we’ve seen so far are the corrupted sea creatures. We saw the Corrupted Giant Shark a few weeks back, and yesterday got a look at the Sorrow Fish. Chris Perkins spoke to Comicbook.com about some of the new monsters in Netherdeep’s bestiary, revealing fearsome new foes:

“You might find a monster that looks like a big scary jellyfish, but it’s also a jellyfish that can petrify you. That’s not normal. Then, we made sure that each of these creatures had a distinctive silhouette, or a distinctive profile. This one is sort of eel-like, this one is shark-like, just so we get some variety.”

But perhaps most terrifying of all is the Netherdeep itself:

“The Netherdeep itself had to be more than just a simple underwater environment, it needed something else going on.”

And in the interview Perkins reveals that the Netherdeep has formed around a “powerful entity” that had been imprisoned for ages. The Netherdeep is just a consequence:

“The Netherdeep is an expression of this creature’s psyche. So what does that mean for all the creatures that haunt it?”

Aboleths & Aberrations

Another big reveal from Perkins to Comicbook.com, showcased a very surprising twist on an old favorite monster. Major spoilers for the adventure, but here’s what you can expect from one of the major antagonists:

“One of the main threats that you face when you hit the underwater part of the adventure is an aboleth. But, this aboleth, unlike any other aboleth I’ve seen, has a second face that has formed on its body, which has led it to believe that it has actually been transformed into another entity, a sort of godlike being.”

Absolutely delicious. With the release date of Call of the Netherdeep only a week away, Wizards of the Coast has been playing their cards very close to the chest this time. Perhaps it’s because of the mysterious nature of the Netherdeep. But compared to both Wild Beyond the Witchlight and Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse, the leaks, spoilers, and previews have been few and far between.

If you want to know more about the Rival Adventurers you’ll face, you can find them here.

And be sure and check back next week for a more in-depth look at Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep.

Happy Adventuring!
