Season of War: Thondia brings back the Anvil of Apotheosis so you can forge your own legendary heroes!

If you’re looking to add some narrative vibes to your heroes by starting from a blank slate and building from there then the Anvil of Apotheosis is for you. In the upcoming Thondia book, GW has re-issued and updated the rules for creating your own heroes of legend. Build them out how you want them — the Destiny Points are in your hands.

“This is the return of a firm fan favourite, which first appeared in the 2020 General’s Handbook and allowed narrative players to bring weird and wonderful kitbashed heroes to their games of Age of Sigmar. “

Anvil of Apotheosis Returns

So how does this system work? Well it’s based on the Destiny Point system. You start by choosing a points limit based on type of hero you’re making. Then you spend those points to add all the special stuff. GW has created a hero and we’re going to take a look at that example to see the types of things you can do.

Destiny Points

Champions get 20 destiny points, great for heroes on foot. Conquerors get 40 points, affording extra luxuries such as giant mounts. This iteration of the Anvil takes it even further – thanks to the unique Path to Glory objective Hero Quest, you can now set your own destiny point limit and work out how many battles you must participate in to recruit them. “

After you select your points it’s time to start spending them!

Ancestry Choices

“The Anvil includes 24 race options, including Aelves, Daemons, Stormcast Eternals, and many more. The ancestry you pick will cost a number of destiny points and will determine your hero’s Move, Wounds, Bravery, and Save characteristics, as well as giving them certain keywords. You will have opportunities to buff these later down the line.”

GW started with a Kruleboyz Orruk. So let’s see the baseline for that:

We also know that it cost 5 Destiny Points for this Ancestry.

You can’t go into battle without weapons. Well, I mean, you could but that’s probably not the best idea. Thankfully, you can spend those DP on weapons and you’ll need some!

We’re assuming there are going to be lots of weapon options. GW mentions all sorts of weapon options from “classic sword-and-board, dual wielding, two different sizes of bows, and much more.” We can also see that each weapon has a DP cost associated with them as well. For this hero, they only opted for spending 2 DP. I think they are holding out for something later down the line…

Archetype Options

“There are three archetypes to choose from that grant associated abilities. Adding an archetype does not cost any destiny points – a priest or mage shouldn’t have to pay for talents they were born with, after all.”

GW opted for the Commander Archetype. Seems like a good start…but what else are they packing? Obviously there are other restrictions and options they have to consider. So far, this hero seems to be pretty straightforward. I wonder what’s going to make them special?

Bestial Companion Options

Ahh…here we go. If you want your Hero to be mounted it’s going to cost you some DP. In this case, I think we know what GW has been saving those point for.

As you can see from the two charts, there are LOTS of options to invest in. There are other mounts but they decided to splurge on the Gargantuan Beast. Stat-wise the beast does pack a punch. And you can really go nuts with the secondary options, too.

After this was all sorted, GW had spent 31 DP total on this character. That left them 9 points to send on the next and final step…

Characteristic Enhancements and Abilities

GW went with these 3 options for a total of 9 DP to finish off their hero. There are quite a few other options to sort through. If you didn’t spend points on a mount or if you were going with a cheaper hero this is the spot where you’d round out any leftover points.

If you want to give customizing your own hero a stab then pick up the upcoming Season of War: Thondia book coming soon from GW.

There are LOTS more options to customize your own hero. What are you going to build?
