The Quiet Year, hands down one of the best RPGs about society collapsing, is back in stock. End your world in style!

The Quiet Year is one of those games that once you play it, changes the way you think. It gets into your bloodstream. It settles in amid your stray thoughts. You’ll look back and realize the world is different — and you helped change it.

And that is the heart of what The Quiet Year is all about. This game is a relatively simple map game. In it, you define the struggles and the triumphs of a community living on after civilization has collapsed. You have one quiet year to try and build something good or lasting. And all the while, with every turn, with every decision, time ticks down.

It’s a roleplaying game unlike most others. You might play a character but it’s not a game about individual characters accomplishing individual goals. It’s about community. And the people within it. Make no mistake, your character matters. Your character might feel contempt about what’s happening, and unsatisfied characters make things harder.

Mechanically, all you need is a deck of cards and a group of friends willing to play through it. But The Quiet Year‘s physical form is absolutely gorgeous. Made on custom cards, with beautiful tokens and the actual book you’ll need to play, this game is a set piece. As well it should be. But it’s hard to explain exactly how it goes. One of the best things you can do is watch or listen to someone else playing it. Friends at the Table have an excellent example of the game, at the start of their Marielda arc.

The Quiet Year – Back In Stock

But as we mentioned, the Quiet Year is back in stock now. Designer Avery Alder announced late last week that the game was back. And with no small amount of irony accompanying this game set after the collapse of civilization, now dealing with global shipping disruption.

The Quiet Year is a map game. You define the struggles of a community living after the collapse of civilization, and attempt to build something good within their quiet year. Every decision and every action is set against a backdrop of dwindling time and rising concern.

The game is played using a deck of cards – each of the 52 cards corresponds to a week during the quiet year. Each card triggers certain events – bringing bad news, good omens, project delays and sudden changes in luck. At the end of the quiet year, the Frost Shepherds will come, ending the game.

For 2-4 players, 3-4 hours.
