Love is a Battlefield- The Best of Sailor Uranus and Neptune Cosplays
There’s no hiding the love these two Sailor Senshi have for each other… Even with a poorly botched cover story and decades of censorship. We’re fanning the flames of romance for these Haruka and Michiru cosplays!
Sailor Moon is one of the most influential pieces of media from my childhood. From elementary school days of sprinting home in time to catch the last few minutes of the daily reruns, to borrowing the VHS tapes my cousin owned and I didn’t have access too… I could never get enough of the Sailor Senshi and their battle between good, evil, and the challenges of growing up. This week we’re celebrating the most iconic (and controversial) relationship of the series with these Haruka and Michiru cosplays.
The relationship between these two amazing warriors isn’t controversial on its own- oooooh no. What’s controversial is what happened in the 1990s when the show was adopted for American audiences, and censored within in inch of its life. Haruka and Michiru, (Sailors Uranus and Neptune for the uninitiated) went from being lovers in the manga and anime… To being cousins in the American adaptation.
Beyond that, multiple other characters were either edited to change genders, or sexualities, or simply removed from the series as a whole, to suit a very conservative (and sloppily executed) agenda to keep such “offensive topics” from American kiddos. Because HEAVEN forbid we be given the opportunity to see the world and all its colors, right? Check out this video below for a brief synopsis of the shenanigans.
Loving the Outer Senshi
Haruka and Michiru are some of the most elusive and powerful Sailor Senshi in the Sailor Moon franchise. They run their own agenda separate from the other Sailor Scouts, slipping in to get the job done and retreating just as quickly. Powerful, dynamic, and oozing grace and sophistication, these two ladies were my role models as a kid. I couldn’t decide which one I wanted to be, and which one I wanted to be WITH.
Cosplayers have been portraying characters from this series for decades now. There are yearly fan events to celebrate the show, new adaptations happening all the time, and the Sailor Senshi are present at just about every pop-culture convention you can shake a stick at. There is no shortage of gorgeous cosplays to choose from for today’s Pride month feature, so we’ve picked a few off the top that we hope you enjoy. Continue the fight for justice and love, and remember – in the name of the moon, they’ll punish you!

Haruka: Michiru!
Michiru: You’re always saying that whenever you see a pretty girl!
Haruka: Don’t say it like that!
Michiru: I wonder if I should go home with your lunch…
Haruka: Oh, come on!
Michiru: Good for her! Such a young girl!
Haruka: You sound like an old woman!
Michiru: Oh, do I?
Michiru: Would you be a model for my painting?
Haruka: Pass! I don’t like that kind of thing.

Haruka: *blushes and coughs into fist*
Michiru: It is not imaginary! I can see it clearly! As can you!
Michiru: I know more about you than you do… because I watch you all the time!
Michiru: What?
Haruka: Let’s keep driving! I’m not going to let you go tonight!
Michiru: My…

Michiru: It’s not like you to become jealous, Haruka!
Michiru: That’s called jealousy, Haruka.
Michiru: “I have no regrets. Otherwise we wouldn’t have survived either. Besides… I wanted to save those girls.”
Haruka: “Yeah I know what you mean. Watching these fish really makes me feel mellow.”
Michiru: “Silly. I wasn’t talking about the fish.”
