Games Workshop is showcasing some of the new rules for the Skaven in their upcoming Battletome. Get ready for the Skaven Swarm!

The Skaven are getting some new tools for the trade to take on their enemies. Their Battletome is coming to pre-order this weekend and Games Workshop is pulling the covers off some of their nasty new tricks. Let’s dive in to see what the swarm can do on the tabletop.

“Emboldened by a perverse faith in the power of probability, the verminous warriors of the Under-Empire surge forward in a tidal wave of chittering teeth and rusty blades. The upcoming Battletome: Skaven gives these massive hordes the tools they need to fight as an irrepressible whole.”

Battletome Skaven Rules

The first rule we’re getting a teaser for is their updated Strength in Numbers — and it’s a big one.

No longer will your back ranks get left out of the fight as the Skaven will gain some extra reach with their attacks. Thematically, this is supposed to represent a tidal wave of attacks coming from the Skaven. The warriors at the back of the fight are surging forward to make a quick stab before falling back into the crowd. That’s neat!

How this will actually play out on the tabletop is going to be a whole other thing. At least the max range is limited to 3″ so you’ll still need to be engaged with a unit to hit them at the longest range. Still, cunning generals will be using this to target units their opponents previously thought were “safe” from combat. Watch out for big packs of rats!

“Two other battle traits – Scurry Away and Lead from the Back – are also returning with slight reworks. These are indispensable tools in the playbook of any self-respecting (and self-preserving) Grey Seer, ensuring your tactical geniuses can leverage their powerful Clan abilities in relative safety. Valuable targets weave between disposable minions, luring in the cream of the crop before bogging them down in a protracted battle with numberless chaff.”

Targeting Skaven heroes is going to be a little tricky — at least in melee. You could always attempt to take out the unit first though. Scurry Away is also very thematic. Perfect for your less combat oriented heroes and a way to gain some additional movement out of combat.

We’re sure the Skaven are going to have even more devious tricks up their sleeves. We’ll be keeping an eye out for their Battletome very soon!
