Neil Patrick Harris Joins ‘Doctor Who’ – First Look
It’s a good month to be a Whovian – the newest BBC announcement adds Neil Patrick Harris to Doctor Who cast ahead of the 60th anniversary.
This morning the BBC gifted us more delicious Doctor Who news. Beloved actor and Broadway superstar Neil Patrick Harris has been cast in a role for the upcoming 60th-anniversary special. The event already promised to be a star-studded event, with plenty of character returns to be had. For Harris, we got more than just a cast announcement – we got a first look at his character.
First Look at NPH in Doctor Who
Like so many Doctor Who character aesthetics, that’s a pretty specific look. And as usual, writer and showrunner Russel T. Davies teased us a little about NPH’s character.
“It’s my huge honour to open our studio doors for the mighty Neil Patrick Harris… but who, why, what is he playing? You’ll just have to wait. But I promise you, the stuff we’re shooting now is off the scale. Doctor beware!”
Who will he play? indeed. One of our staffers was quick to point out that he’s dressed as Peter Cushing‘s Doctor from a pair of classic Doctor Who movies. Movies that the BBC just recently restored and made available for pre-order. Is it possible that Harris is the answer to the long-time questions about Cushing’s Doctor being considered canon?
Doctor Who News
Of course, this is just the most recent in a line of incredible announcements about the future of Who. Heartstopper breakout star Yasmin Finney is joining the cast as a new Rose. Fan-favorite Doctor #10 star David Tennant is returning for the anniversary special, along with Donna Noble actress Catherine Tate. And of course, BBC revealed that the role of the 14th Doctor will be played by Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa.
With the return of Russel T. Davies to the show, the future of Who is looking bright and beautiful. And Neil Patrick Harris will certainly add to the show’s glow.
The ‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Special will likely air some time in late fall of 2023.
