Age of Sigmar: Subfactions of the Sylvaneth – Life and Those Who Take It
Four wasn’t enough for Alarielle; she wanted seven seasons of war.
The new Sylvaneth battletome is officially out, and the lands of Ghyran have never been so terrifying. Bug-mounted knights, flying archers, and an extremely angry bush join the ranks of Alarielle alongside some spicy new rules. Primary among the changes are updated subfactions, bringing Sylvaneth in line with updated 3.0 factions at last. We talked about the first four earlier this week, but for those we missed, worry not; we’ll talk about the last three today.
Winterleaf
For a long time, Winterleaf was my favorite subfaction for the Sylvaneth. The exploding 6s, the deadly artefact, and the general ice theme were fantastic, and I loved it. The new subfaction has blunted my enthusiasm a little, but I can’t say I hate the change. Units within 3″ of your Winterleaf fighters can’t retreat, so once you charge them, they’re there until the bitter end, likely their own. Even better, if you decide to play during the “winter” season of Everdusk, units within 3″ can’t teleport either. Nighthaunt and Kharadron players will feel a real chill up their spines when you tell them they can’t go anywhere.
Dreadwood
If you heard the spooky tree spirit idea and thought, “That’s fine, but can I make it worse?” first of all, I like your energy, and second, definitely pick the Dreadwood subfaction. Those spooky sprouts can take extra teleport moves once per battle and can do the same with leaving combat. Even better, the top-tier spook Spite-Revenants are Battleline for you, meaning you can take the absolute worst of the worst and flood the board with them.
Harvestboon
The Wild Riders of the Sylvaneth squad, Harvestboon is all about your mounted warriors charging into the enemy with reckless abandon. After deployment, but before turns begin, your Lancers and Seekers can make a 12″ free move, getting them right in your enemy’s face from the get-go. Even better, both those units become battleline, allowing you to drown your enemy’s screams with the drone of insectoid wings. Think that scene in Nausica but muuuuuch worse.
Which subfaction will you be using?
