Amazon’s Fallout live-action series is finally in production, has a cast, and the first look at the sets is promising.

Fallout made its debut on PC over twenty years ago (we’re old, it’s okay) and has been expanded multiple times. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic future inspired by atompunk with plenty of 1950s callbacks. The theme hadn’t been explored before, and that and its sense of humor helped make it an instant hit. Players got to explore a wasteland filled with dangerous factions, monsters, and ghouls. The games have achieved record-setting sales and received hundreds of awards, including dozens of Game of the Year awards.

Amazon’s Fallout Live-Action Series

Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan left Warner Brothers and signed a massive deal with Amazon to create new shows – this project has them working directly with Bethesda. The pair are excited to explore the Fallout universe. I enjoyed the three-season run of West World they led, and think they’re a good match for a post-apocalyptic story.

“‘Fallout’ is one of the greatest game series of all time. Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios.”

The studio has finally made a move on it as they try to keep up with the streaming wars; and before they lose the license. Along with Nolan, Amazon has secured Geneva Robertson-Dworet (2018’s Tomb Raider) and Graham Wagner (The Office, Silicon Valley) as showrunners. Their mix of action, sci-fi, and dark comedy backgrounds should make for a compelling show that understands its source.

Not sure how much of the bleak first game the show will concentrate on vs. these types of shenanigans that came in later installments.

Behind the Scenes

So far the cast includes Walton Goggins with top billing, plus Ella Purnell, Kyle MacLachlan, Aaron Moten, and Xelia Mendes-Jones. No word on when the series will arrive, but they’re filming. Based on these leaked photos it looks pretty good. Hopefully, the rest of it will match.
