Our Favorite Spies in the ‘Star Wars’ Galaxy
The Empire and Rebellion are both full of spies, and these are just a few of our favorite masters of intelligence and espionage.
Andor is coming out next month to give us a deeper look at the world of Star Wars spy work and undercover intelligence. But there are many spies throughout the galaxy and we’re a fan of the work they do.
Vi Moradi
Created for Delilah Dawson’s 2017 novel, Phasma, Vi Moradi is one of the best new additions to Star Wars and deserves much more spotlight than she’s getting. But, y’know, spies wouldn’t be as effective if everyone knows who they were. She’s known for her talent, ego, humor, and touch of swagger, and for being one of the characters who you may see more of in the parks than on the big screen. And while she’s on Batuu she’ll likely be sending secret messages out to other resistance members and sympathizers to rally the forces against the First Order. We all know that large portions of the most recent Star Wars additions aren’t many people’s favorites. But Vi Moradi is a bright spot in a pretty bleak sea.
Agent Kallus
Perhaps my personal favorite spy, we meet Kallus as an agent for the Imperial Security Bureau and finish his story as a full-blown member of the Rebellion. Of course, there’s some double-dealing and spy work for the Rebel Alliance mixed in the middle there. What’s great about Kallus’ story though is that he starts as a full-blown Imperial believer and transforms throughout the seasons of Star Wars Rebels. He’s also good enough at being Fulcrum that only Grand Admiral Thrawn is able to figure him out. And once he is caught he manages to escape Imperial detention and fully join the Rebellion in person.
Mara Jade
Another foe-turned-friend but this time not in the current canon, Mara Jade was one of the Empire’s most effective spies. And assassins. As the Emperor’s hand, one of her most important tasks was collecting information and keeping an eye on people for Palpatine. This included her performing some spy work against Darth Vader himself when she noticed his interest in a young Jedi named Luke Skywalker. Later, Jade would use this expertise to find spies within the New Republic.
Cassian Andor
Breaking Jyn Erso out of jail, stealing and reprograming an imperial security droid, and being an invaluable member of the team tasked with stealing the first Death Star‘s plans, Cassian Andor may be the most famous and accomplished spy in Star Wars history. We’re about to get a little more of his story in his stand-alone streaming series. But even without it, Andor’s intelligence and undercover work have played some of the most substantial roles in Star Wars history.
