Pinhead is Back in Hulu’s ‘Hellraiser’ and She Looks Terrifying
The casting for Pinhead the latest Hellraiser sequel raised a lot of eyebrows, but Jamie Clayton is spine-chilling as the Hell Priest. Take a look for yourself.
Pinhead has been done a good service by Doug Bradley, Stephan Smith Collins, and Paul T. Taylor. But it’s time to pass the leather and nails to someone new. In this new chapter (this is not a remake), it’s Jamie Clayton.
Director David Bruckner has been a Hellraiser fan since he saw the original as a teenager. He knew that this movie had to capture what he felt that first viewing, he told EW:
“We felt a kind of anticipation around the fans to reimagine the character. We knew we wanted Pinhead to be a woman. Jamie was just the right person for the role. A person’s identity can be really exciting for a role in many ways, but I have to emphasize that Jamie absolutely killed, that’s how we got there.”
She looks terrifying in this first photo. I can’t wait to see her surrounded by Cenobites and torturing humans.
A New Pinhead Brings Complaints
There’s been some whining on the net about Clayton’s casting, and they’re mainly based on misogyny and transphobia. The source material’s author, Clive Barker, is a producer. Doug Bradley told Bloody Disgusting that he’s intrigued by the choice and that he’s a fan of Clayton’s.
“It seemed like [a female Pinhead] was coming. It’s an interesting piece of casting. I don’t know Jamie. Of course, they’ve taken even a little bit of a wrinkle in that, because Jamie is transgender. I’m not familiar with her recent work, but there was a science fiction series on Netflix several years ago called Sense8, which I was quite a fan of. Jamie was in that, and I really, really liked her performance in that.
We say ‘female Pinhead’ like we know what that means, but there are a million shades of femininity. Where exactly are they going to go with that? Everything about Hellraiser has always been transgressive. Everything, always, from start to finish. It’s not a new idea in that sense, but I’m intrigued. I’m in the same position as all the rest of you, I guess, to see where that goes.”
In that interview, Bradley also let slip that The Chatterer is returning, but very tall and lanky this time. The movie is introducing at least one new cenobite – The Masque is seen below. So long-time fans will be getting a lot of new horrors in this movie.
Hellraiser
Along with Clayton, the movie stars Odessa A’zion as the poor human that plays with the Lament Configuration.
“A young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension.”
Hellraiser arrives on Hulu on October 7th.
