Age of Sigmar: Battlescroll Update’s Big Winners and Losers
The newest Battletome rules update has come to the Mortal Realms, and a few armies fared much better, or worse than others.
It’s that magical time of year again, Wargamers; update season! The brand new big overhaul, Battlescroll: Galletian Reinforcements, recently dropped over on the GW website, bringing a little more balance to the Age of Sigmar meta. As with all such updates, there were a few clear winners receiving buffs and overall improvements to bring them up from the bottom (or, in some cases, from the high middle). However, there are also a fair few nerfs, some more painful than others. Let’s look at the latest update’s biggest winners and losers.
Winner: Gloomspite Gitz
Probably the biggest winners of the update were the green meanies, and frankly, it’s long overdue. Gloomspite has suffered terribly recently; it’s refreshing to see them get a quasi-overhaul to bring them up to fighting numbers. In addition to having the most point reductions (10 units in total), Arachnarok Spider with Spiderfang Warparty models are now Battleline, so long as your General is a Spiderfang. This is a fantastic update; I hope it will bring the Gitz back to Gloomspite Gitz, pulling away from the Troggoth spam that has dominated their army up to this point.
Loser: Maggotkin of Nurgle
Love or hate them, the children of Papa Nurgle are a dominating force on the battlefield. Their resilience, power, and surprising speed have kept them in the top 5 for quite some time. This new nerf, however, will likely change that. All the mortal Rotfly units have seen a significant points increase, as have the two most popular Maggoth riders. I imagine the goal is to encourage players to fit a more Nurgle-esque playstyle: slow, durable units that must be outmaneuvered. We’ll see if it sticks.
Winners: Stormcast
Surprising no one, the Stormcast also came out near the top. With 9 points reductions, including the big dragons, they’re even stronger than before. Frankly, I don’t think this was deserved; while they aren’t high table according to the Metawatch, they consistently outperform most other factions, at least as far as our BCP reports go. But, GW has to protect their golden sons, and I can’t fault them for that.
