Magic The Gathering is churning out a lot of new content this year, and Jumpstart 2022 is definitely one to watch.

Hot on the heels of The Brother’s War, Wizards is giving us a brand new “starter” set with Magic the Gathering: Jumpstart 2022, available this weekend. Each pack is based around a single color and one of 46 unique themes, ranging in rarity just like the cards in the packs. While this might seem like a gamble too far, the cards available in the set are well worth the risk; some of them are staples of powerful Commander decks. Here are three reasons you’ll want to check out the new set, even if it’s just for singles.

Incredible New Cards

Jumpstart 2022 introduces fifty-one brand new cards and some of them are absolute dynamos. Fans of the old Marrow-Gnawer rat EDH deck will be happy to see Ashcoat, and Urza decks will want to scoop up Lita to keep their artifacts fresh. There’s even a new legendary Monkey that gives out free artifacts, only to steal them to buff your own simian army. There’s something for almost everyone in this set, sure to boost even the nastiest of decks.

Reprints/New Art

Alongside the brand new cards are a bunch of reprints, some with gorgeous new art. These cards are powerful pieces that fit into one of the varied themes, and can provide a shot in the arm to any flagging Commander deck. I’m particularly fond of the Arlinn reprint, seen above with the three goodest boys, and the Rhystic study. There aren’t many cards in the set that can’t find SOME place in EDH decks.

Great Starting Point

As the name suggests, Jumpstart is a great way to get new players into the game. All you need to do is grab two packs, shuffle them together, and you can play a quick game right there to learn the basics. Because each pack is themed, you can also use them as a launching point for a new EDH deck. The possibilities with this set are truly endless.
