Warhammer 40K Meta Hotness: Tyrannofex

Tyrannofex’s would probably be too good if they were any cheaper.  But this giant Tyranid beasts are indeed beasts on the tabletop.

Tyrannofex’s are one of those interesting units where if they got cheaper they would probably be too good.  Instead they have to compete with stuff that is already better because they cost less – even though this giant beast is well – a beast on the tabletop.

The version we want to talk about today is the Jormungandr versions that let this big fat monster become objective secured.  We all know how much of a pain they are to shift and how they just own that mousepad objective like the bought it at an auction.  It is there and you have to invest a lot to remove that giant mutant tick of death off of the battlefield.  This means you need to lock into Territorial Instincts to give your giant bugs the instincts to be like – this is my expensive mousepad and not yours!

Tyrannofex 101

They are big, tough as heck, and shoot pretty good.  There isn’t much else to say beyond they are just big Tyranid monsters that are a giant armored pain in the butt to remove.  Add in Objective Secured and you see how this gets even harder to take off the table as they aggressively move forward and take command of objectives.

Oh It Shoots Too!

A Tyrannofex doesn’t only have a ton of wounds with a 2+ save – it also shoots.  You have two different choices with either a heavy 30 shot or an auto hitting flamer designed with a nicer – flatter amount of random damage.  The d6+6 is just so good at throwing out some consistent damage. You add an upgrade and they start to have even more fun damage with their weapons. Enjoy throwing on some Voracious Ammunition that is always hungry to hurt you with Mortal wounds.

Tyrannofexes are a Pain To Remove

A big monster with 17 wounds, toughness 8, and a 2+ save is pretty dang hard to remove.  That lovely 17 wound limit also means it can hide behind obscuring terrain and just be a rotten little solider for your army of Tyranid murder monsters.

Dean Gianotti took this to a 4th place finish at the Winter Assault in Boston – a 86 player, 5 round event.  He was undefeated with a draw using the big ole  Tyrannofex as a giant objective secured body ready to rock the tabletop.

Tyrannofex’s Are Hot

These guys are fat, tough, and do a lot of decent damage as they rumble up the field.  Only the most dedicated shooting can really move them as they lurk between the MDF walls of the 40k battlefield.  Their screams echoing thru the horrors lurking in the shadows as they pepper your army with acid spray. If you see one, prepare for some serious work to get rid of it.

Let us know what units you think are hot right now, down in the comments!
