The Uncertain Future of ‘Game of Thrones’ Projects on HBO
George R.R. Martin reveals the future of all of the Game of Thrones spin-offs on HBO. Plus the HotD writers tease a major plot.
First up, some House of the Dragon news. We have a while before the next season airs, but the writers are sharing some details. One of the most ruthless revenge plots in Westeros lore will show up early in the season. Daemon Targaryen sends a pair of killers (dubbed Blood and Cheese) to the Red Keep to avenge the death of Rhaenyra’s son, Lucerys Velaryon. The two assassinate a member of the royal family, which escalates the Dance of Dragons from a diplomatic conflict to all-out war.
According to Variety, the writers aren’t tip-toeing around this violent part of the story.
“‘We are currently writing the finale of Season 2, ‘Hess told Variety when asked… if the ‘House of the Dragon’ writers’ room had already penned the on-screen version of the infamous Blood and Cheese storyline. ‘I don’t think you will be disappointed.'”

The Future of Game of Thrones on HBO
Since Game of Thrones wrapped its final season there has been a laundry list of possible spin-offs in various stages of development. These projects have been mentioned in interviews over the last couple of years, but none have panned out.
- Snow (about Jon Snow)
- Flea Bottom (set in the slums of King’s Landing)
- The Long Night (White Walkers origin series – canceled)
- The Sea Snake aka 9 Voyages (about Corlys Velaryon)
- The Hedge Knight (based on Tales of Dunk and Egg)
- Ten Thousand Ships (about Princess Nymeria)
- The Golden Empire (animated, set in set in Yi Ti)
In a recent blog post, the author revealed that while there are shows being developed at HBO, none of been greenlit and he’s not sure what the future holds.
… HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, season two. And several of the other successor shows that we’re developing with HBO. (Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon. A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly).
With HBO in upheaval (they removed more shows from HBOMax this weekend), Martin may be a bit optimistic. We’ll see if anything gets beyond ideas in the next year. A Jon Snow series seems the most likely, though not the most interesting, possibility.
