Being a henchman for the world’s oldest vampire is a really crappy job, but how do you quit? Find out in Renfield.

Bad bosses are the worst, but none are quite as bad as The Prince of Darkness. He makes his servants do all sorts of morally questionable things – deliver blood bags to his lair, capture very specific victims/meals, find fabulous red velvet suits, etc. Dracula is a demanding narcissist you can’t say no to… if you want to live. And that’s what Renfield longs to do after centuries of service – live his own life. He wants out.

Check out the first super camp trailer.

The movie is based on a story from comic writer Robert Kirkman who compared the tone of the project to Invincible, telling the Fat Man Beyond Podcast:

“It’s a story about [Renfield] being Dracula’s henchman and how shitty a job that is. It’s a fun, extremely violent comedy because I’ve got a crutch, and it’s violence.”

I was already all in for this project when Cage was cast as Dracula two years back. The campy tone here is a fantastic twist to the horror classic. The first reboot of Universal’s monsters was a failure, but they’re succeeding in subversion. Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man moved off the classic re-make formula and won at the box office and with critics. Now we have these two in a Dracula workplace comedy. Fantastic.

Renfield Cast & Details

Renfield is directed by Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie) from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Rick & Morty). Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult lead the cast. The movie co-stars Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, and Adrian Martinez.

In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula. Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.

Renfield arrives in theaters on April 14th.
