The Punisher is Coming to the MCU & He’s Bringing Jon Bernthal With Him
Daredevil: Born Again is turning into a Defenders reunion. We should all be thankful because it’s bringing us the best Frank Castle ever.
Charlie Cox was the man behind the mask for three seasons on Netflix – before Disney+ took over Marvel streaming. When all of the Defenders Saga was canceled in 2019, fans weren’t sure if they’d see the characters again. Until a favorite hero showed up in street clothes in Spider-Man: No Way Home and his nemesis appeared in Hawkeye. And then there’s that amazing walk of shame in She-Hulk.
Dare Devil: Born Again
A new show focused on Matt Murdoch and his street-level justice was announced last year. Dare Devil: Born Again is officially part of the MCU’s Phase Five and is set to debut sometime next year. With a whopping 18 episodes – more than any other Marvel streaming show. Matt Corman (Covert Affairs) and Chris Ord (Containment) are attached to write and executive produce.
The show appears to be named after a 1986 run of the comic by Frank Miller. As with a lot of Miller’s stories, it’s a dark tale. It details Daredevil’s descent into madness and destitution at the hands of Kingpin. Followed by his struggle to rebuild his life. The story was loosely adapted into the third season of Netflix’s Daredevil. No word on if this is being revisited or if Matt is going to get a different type of rebirth story. It’s been reported that it’s going to be a direct sequel to Echo, but that’s not confirmed.
There are a lot of directions this could go. I’m hoping/expecting a hard-hitting action-based show closer to The Falcon and The Winter Soldier than an all-out comedy like She-Hulk. The light-hearted Matt we saw this season was fantastic and I hope he shows up in Jenn’s corner of the MCU gain, but we don’t need a Daredevil comedy show. At least not with this project – and its cast is pointing to something more serious.
Dare Devil: Born Again Cast
It’s been confirmed that Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Alaqua Cox are attached. As well as newcomers Margarita Levieva, Sandrine Holt, Nikki James, and Michael Gandolfini. Oh, and some dude named Jon Bernthal. The actor posted his response to the news on Instagram.

I’d say that’s a confirmation – wouldn’t you? I am a big fan of Bernthal’s turn as Frank (and in general). I cannot wait for this new show. Every announcement just keeps adding to the possibilities. I’m hoping they can get Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll signed up. Maybe Chris Brewster and Philip J Silvera. That would be lovely. Fans of canceled shows can win sometimes.
