Warhammer 40K: Free Lion El’Jonson Rules To Download
Games Workshop is unleashing the Lion with a new model and free rules you can download for the Dark Angel Primarch
Lion El’Jonson is going up for Pre-order this weekend from Games Workshop and as part of that release all the rules of the Lion are free to download for all! How does the Lion stack-up? Well, from the previews we had some initial impressions. But now that we’ve got all the rules, see for yourself:

“Some say he’s a 10-foot giant, others claim him to be a paragon of ancient and forbidden gene-smithing, and others still proclaim him a forest-born wild man uplifted by the Emperor’s grace. Oddly enough, they’re all (mostly) correct, and that just goes to show how powerful the legend of the Lion truly is.”
So now that you can see his entire datasheet we’ve got the full picture. Lion El’Jonson is a beatstick in close-combat. That much has been obvious. What we didn’t know before was that he’s got a few additional abilities to factor in. First up, Martial Exemplar is new and it ensures that he’s going to be swinging in that round of combat:
Based on the text, I’m pretty sure that means the Lion gets to swing even before charging units or other units with any “strike first” abilities — provided he starts the Fight Phase within Engagement Range. Basically, if the Lion is within Engagement Range, he’s going to get his attacks that turn…and it’s a LOT of swings. He also has a typical Primarch Aura, too:
He’s going to get the benefits of his own aura so he’s also re-rolling 1s to-hit and to-wound. Considering his WS is +2 to start, he’s going to be pretty consistent when it comes to scoring those hits! And, as we’ve seen previously, his sword packs a punch and can easily wound most targets in the game:
You might be thinking “well, I’ll just mess him up in the shooting and/or with Psychic powers.” And yeah…you can try! Just remember that vs Psykers he’s got some handy defenses:
And as for shooting, don’t forget his other piece of wargear:
And speaking of wargear there’s also the matter of his shooting attack:
If you’re in range to shoot this pistol, you should fire both shots, all the times. There’s not really a downside here.
You can’t really hide from him either…
Between his excellent defensive stats and his scary close combat abilities, Lion El’Jonson is going to cause some headaches for people on the tabletop. You get that entire package for 320 points, too. If you’re a Dark Angel player I’m sure there’s a few things you can cut in your 2000 point lists to fit the Lion in there…I heard he’s good for it.
