From Star Wars to the Auction House: Princess Leia’s Dress Expected to Fetch Millions
If you have a million or two laying around, you can own a piece of movie history when this Princess Leia dress goes up for auction.
Do you have a whole bunch of disposable income and an affinity for collecting classic Star Wars movie props and costumes? Because if so, you may soon have the opportunity to own one of Princess Leia‘s iconic dresses from the film that started it all; 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV also known as A New Hope.
The Dress
The dress going up for auction is the Ceremonial Dress Costume from the very end of A New Hope. You know; when the rebellion gives medals to Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, but not Chewbacca? That dress! And judging by the picture from the auction house’s catalog, it seems to come with the matching metallic belt.
The dress is described as being made of lightweight cream silk with a hidden zipper and a hook and eye fastener on the caped shoulder. And while other Princess Leia costumes are out there and have been preserved, the Ceremonial Dress is thought to be the only surviving Leia costume from A New Hope. Despite only appearing in the movie for a few moments in the end, the dress will always be instantly recognizable to any Star Wars fan.
This dress is part of a larger three-day auction that will take place from June 28th to June 30th in Los Angeles, California. It is expected to sell for between one and two million dollars.
In comparison, the gold bikini which was made famous in the scenes in Jabba the Hutt’s palace in 1983’s sequel, Return of the Jedi sold at auction in 2015 for $96,000. And just a few months ago, one of the blasters used by Han Solo was also sold at auction. Though, at this time I am not sure how much it sold for.
About Princess Leia & Carrie Fisher
Carrie Fisher portrayed Princess Leia Organa on the big screen from 1977 through 2019. Though, for her final appearance as the princess-turned-general the studio had to get a bit creative. Fisher suddenly passed away in 2016 after 60 years of being unapologetically and fearlessly herself.
She was recently honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on May the 4th, known by fans as Star Wars Day. Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd paid tribute to her mom at the event through her clothing, and by being equally fearless, weird, unique, and downright cool.
Princess Leia’s importance in the Star Wars franchise cannot be overstated as her character moved from junior senator and princess to rebel leader, to politician and architect of a fledgling government, and back to Rebel leader and general. She was the character little kids could look up to back in 1977, and stayed a character they looked up to as we grew up and introduced their own kids to these films.
Do you own any movie props or pieces of cinematic history like this Princess Leia dress? Would you bid on the Ceremonial Dress if you had unlimited funds? Will you be bidding on it next month? Let us know in the comments!
May the Force be with you, adventurers!
