Goatboy’s Grimdark Armylist: 10th Edition-Proof Imperial Knights
If you’re starting a new 40K army before 10th Edition I probably would look towards an Imperial Knights or Chaos Knights army.
I get the feeling 10th Edition is going to be launch hot and heavy out the gate with events and games to play all over the place. Currently, as a player I want to do well on the tabletop, but I always feel like I should put more effort into the hobby side of things.
The hobby is what keeps me moving in this direction of having way too many plastic kits right now. I paint alright but wonder; if I really buckled down, built some cool stuff, and went hog wild on my army/display could I do well enough to win overall and other painting contests? It’s one of the things I haven’t really strived for lately beyond just having a decent-looking set of models for the tabletop.
Of course, as time is a lot more precious now – with family, kids, work, commissions, and the daily grind, it’s hard to pry off time to work on a “hobby project”. I also really do enjoy playing so getting it ready to go quickly and efficiently is very important to me. Realistically knowing your painting and time limits is something every hobbyist needs to think about.
Imperial Knights, Hmmm….
This leaves me thinking that I want to really rework an Imperial/Chaos Knight army in some ways. I have a ton of bad guy Knights that are decent. I’m sure I could add a few big ones to make them “special”. Things I could go hog wild on and build out.
Or I could go and look towards good guys and figure something out with that? I won’t bore you with some Chaos Knight nonsense and instead let’s just look at one of the easier purchases to do when searching Amazon/eBay for Warhammer deals.
The Chainbreaker Lance seems like a heck of a deal right now with multiple places having it for $260-299 online. You take that boxed set and think – this pretty much gives me the majority of my army to work off of beyond – a boxed set or two. I still don’t know if having another big knight is worth it. Or perhaps it’s better to just look at – buying two Chainbreaker Boxes and calling it a day.
Putting It All Together

If points look roughly the same in 10th Edition, that gives you close to 1000 points of models in the new Edition. You could get another box, double all the options up, and get yourself another cool big knight too. I think that might be the best and give you the most bang for your dollar.

What Should You Do With Them?
This is a whole lot of plastic and a ton of models to go crazy on. Build an entire “Freeblade” like army with Knight household insignias, a display board that looks Knightly, and just name everything to fully embrace the hobby sides of things. All of this and really just go crazy with an army that might be good but will definitely look good.
