Xbox Games Showcase Surprises: ‘Fable’, ‘Star Wars: Outlaws’, Giant Richard Ayoade, & More
Who needs E3 when you can just do a showcase whenever you want?
Xbox decided to do a big Xbox Showcase + Starfield Direct when E3 would have been going on. There was a ton there but we could only talk about so much. Here are the ones we found the most eye-popping coming to Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Fable
Playground Games’ Fable was announced at E3 2020 after a few failed attempts by Microsoft to get a new one going. No new info on the game had been seen till today. The trailer is a fun time with Richard Ayoade talking to the audience about the importance of vegetables vs a hero until he has to face one in his home. Unfortunately, there is no new info on the gameplay. We do appreciate the tongue-in-cheek humor the trailers have had for it.
South of Midnight
From the creators of Contrast and We Happy Few, this game will be a 3rd person action-adventure game set in the Deep American South. Players will play Hazel, as she explores and encounters creatures from folklore.
“When disaster strikes her hometown, Hazel is called to become a Weaver: a magical mender of broken bonds and spirits. Imbued with these new abilities, Hazel will confront and subdue dangerous creatures, untangle the webs of her own family’s shared past and – if she’s lucky – find her way to a place that feels like home.”
Avowed
Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, Avowed is a new adventure in the world of Pillars of Eternity. The game will be released in 2024 and is an exciting looking 1st person fantasy RPG:
“Players embark on a journey through the Living Lands – a plagued, foreign island full of mysteries and secrets, danger and adventure, choices and consequences. It’s a land that feels foreign yet somewhat intrinsic to you; a place calling out for your help…explore diverse ecosystems and meet companions along the way, while uncovering the darkness plaguing these lands.”

Star Wars: Outlaws
Star Wars Outlaws is being advertised as the first-ever truly open-world Star Wars game ever. Developed by Massive Entertainment, it takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi with players controlling a scoundrel who is just trying to make it in the galaxy.
“Explore new and iconic locations across the galaxy, and risk it all as Kay Vess, an emerging scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life, along with her companion Nix. Fight, steal, and outwit crime syndicates as you join the galaxy’s most wanted. If you’re willing to take the risk, the galaxy is full of opportunity.”
No other info at the moment except they hope to release it in 2024.
Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island
Sea of Thieves is getting another brand-new crossover! Rare and Lucasfilm Games bring an adventure with Guybrush Threepwood as well as other various characters and elements from the beloved Monkey Island series for players to experience. This crossover will be starting July 20th and is a free update.
Atlus presents P3 Reload, P5 Tactica, and new IP Metaphor: ReFantazio
Unfortunately, Atlus’s big show-stopping announcements were released on their social media page 2 days early. P3 Reload is a remake of the game that launched the series into more mainstream: Persona 3. It was the Persona game I started with years ago and the remake looks great. It will have a revamped battle system, new graphics, and gameplay, enhanced audio featuring an all-new English voice-over, a remastered soundtrack with new arrangements, and more.
“Step into the shoes of a transfer student thrust into an unexpected fate and enter the hour “hidden” between one day and the next. Awaken an incredible power and chase the mysteries of Tartarus, fight for your friends, and leave a mark on their memories forever.”

Persona 5 Tactics was the other major leak and will be a tactics RPG game with the cast of P5!
“After a strange incident, the Phantom Thieves wander into a bizarre realm where its citizens are living under tyrannical oppression. Surrounded by a military group named Legionnaires, they find themselves in grave danger until a mysterious revolutionary named Erina rescues them and offers an enticing deal in exchange for their help. What truth lies behind Erina and the deal she offers to the Phantom Thieves?”

The last thing Atlus had that didn’t leak was Metaphor: ReFantazio. This will be its first-ever full-scale fantasy RPG as well as a new IP from the studio behind the Persona games.
“Write your destiny and rise above fear as you step into a fantasy world unlike anything you’ve seen before. Fraught with unsettling mystery, the kingdom stands on a precipice. Now, you must embark on a journey, overcoming obstacles and transforming your bonds with friends into strength.”
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
While Summer Game Fest had Like a Dragon Gaiden, Xbox showed the latest mainline title in the long-running Yakuza series: Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. The game is set for early 2024 with the trailer showing Kasuga Ichiban waking up on a beach in America in only a necklace.
“An unexpected chain of events sets two legendary yakuza, Kasuga Ichiban and Kazuma Kiryu, on a larger-than-life RPG adventure.”
Still Wakes the Deep
Still Wakes the Deep is a new 1st person horror title from the people who created Amnesia and Dear Esther. Taking place on an oil rig, players find themselves fighting for their lives from something that has invaded the rig.
“A Glaswegian oil rig worker must fight for his life through a visceral storm, claustrophobic surroundings, thick, dark and perilous North Sea waters. All communications are cut off, all exits are gone, the only way to defeat the horror aboard is to face it. Rush to escape the terrifying, strange entity that has besieged the rig. It’s aware of you, and it needs you…Through it all, you just pray to hear your daughter’s voice one last time.”
Clockwork Revolution
From the creators of Wasteland and Arcanum comes a time-traveling action-RPG that is very reminiscent of BioShock Infinite‘s floating Columbia.
“After stumbling across an incredible invention that allows you to travel into the past, you discover the city you call home—the vibrant steam-powered metropolis of Avalon—has been carefully crafted through the alteration of key historical events. By traveling back in time, your interactions and choices in the past will have a butterfly effect on the deep, narrative-driven world and characters of Avalon, causing them to change and react in unprecedented ways.”
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess
Capcom announced a brand new IP called Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. It is very similar to Onimusha with it being warriors vs the supernatural but very different in many ways. I am very excited to find out more.
“Explore an incredible world in which traditional Japanese aesthetics are brought to stunning life by the power of RE Engine. Enjoy a unique gameplay experience blending action and strategy. Witness an epic clash between the spirit realm and mortal man.”
Payday 3
Payday is all about robbing banks with friends and the latest in the franchise was announced at the very end of last year. The shown-off gameplay at the showcase looks like more of the same except that is not a bad thing here. The game is aiming for September 21st release.
Carbon Black Xbox Series S
Phil Spencer announced more Xbox consoles will be made to combat any shortages as well as a brand new Series S with a default 1 TB storage vs the original 500 GB one. Expect to start seeing it in stores on September 1st.
Starfield
The final info given was an in-depth dive into the world of Starfield. The game promises big locations, plenty of worlds, a story, and a ton of customization options ranging from characters to ships. The game is set for a September 6th release and we can only hope whatever bugs it will have, will not ruin the day-one experience for anyone.
There are a ton more things shown off that we didn’t touch on and highly recommend checking out for yourselves. Stay tuned because Ubisoft and Capcom have a showcase planned as well.
Happy gaming!
