Warhammer 40,000 has an updated set of rules for all the Combat Patrols and you can check them out right now.

Everyone likes free rules to download and Games Workshop has just unleashed a ton of them. If you’re looking to dabble in a new army or if you’re just looking for a smaller game size that’s easy to dive into then the new Combat Patrols are just the thing.

Combat Patrol is the new way to play quick and balanced games of Warhammer 40,000, fought solely with the contents of a Combat Patrol box. These compact forces are a great starting point for beginners to ease into collecting a full-scale army, a perfect opportunity to try out that new army you’ve had your eye on, or as well as a way for veterans to get their Warhammer 40,000 fix in between the rigours of adult life.

Combat Patrol Rules For All

You’ll need to go the WarCom article and download the rules directly for your respective Combat Patrol. The good news is they are all there regardless of what faction you’re playing as. You’ll also want your respective Indexes as those have the army rules, too. However, you’re going to be using the Datasheets provided in the Combat Patrol Rules for these games. You’ll know they are different because of how they look:

The Combat Patrol Datasheets have the red border tag in the top right and each unit is also uniquely named, too. Furthermore, each Combat Patrol is equipped with specific loadouts, too:

These loadouts reflect the unit’s image on the front of the box which means you’ll be able to play with exactly what’s provided — this is something we’ve seen as a design decision across the board in the new 40k points and Datasheets. It doesn’t always match-up exactly (looking at you Plague Marines) but it’s something everyone has started noticing.

If you’re playing with the models in the Leviathan Boxed set against each other we HIGHLY recommend using the Combat Patrol versions of those lists to square off. The games should be a bit closer and more fair for both sides.

The Combat Patrol format isn’t completely locked-in versions of the factions. Players do get the option to choose a few things when putting their forces together. Things like the Enhancement for your Warlord and the Secondary Objective options do provide a choice. There are also some additional stratagems to tinker with as well.

It’s clear that Games Workshop put some time into developing and balancing these Combat Patrol rules. Personally, I’m very curious about them and think they could be a really interesting way to experience 40k. I’m even wondering if we’re going to see some Combat Patrol Tournaments in the future. I could totally see these semi-fixed lists squaring off against each other in an almost “fighting game” style tournament. Which of the Combat Patrols is going to rise to the top? That’s going to be the fun part to find out!

So go download your Combat Patrol Rules and get playing!
