Are you looking for a quick way to get in some Warhammer 40,000 games? Games Workshop has designed Combat Patrol for you!

Combat Patrol is a new way to play Warhammer 40,000 introduced with 10th Edition. The concept is really simple: Grab a Combat Patrol Box and play with the contents against other Combat Patrol boxes. To facilitate this, Games Workshop has introduced six new Combat Patrol specific missions as well as some slight rules modifications to the Combat Patrol Boxes themselves.

We’ve seen the Combat Patrol rules per faction. And the Combat Patrol Missions are available in the 40k Core Rules Book. But now GW is releasing all these missions for free so anyone can grab them and play.

“Every Combat Patrol has its own rules to ensure they’re balanced against each other, trimming out some abilities that would be overwhelming in a smaller-scale game. They also each come with a unique pair of Secondary Objectives and Enhancements, plus a set of custom Stratagems – all on just a couple of pages.”

The missions are all fairly straight forward. They each come with their own deployments, slightly modified missions rules, and Primary Objectives. Between these and each factions unique secondary mission options players will have a great mix of variety in these Combat Patrols.

While these battles are designed to be played on the smaller scale 44″ x 30″ tables the action isn’t any less intense. I personally think there is a lot of potential here for some type of Combat Patrol Tournament scene in 40k as well. Or at the minimum Combat Patrols could be a really great way for new 40k players to jump into a balanced mode by just getting a Combat Patrols and playing.

The Core Rules are still the same it’s really just the missions that are different. That’s not a bad thing! These semi-fixed forces mean you’ll have to master them by not just learning their rules but also their limitations. Can you still win when you’ve got to deal with built in restrictions? That’s a real challenge!
