Warhammer 40K: New Starter Sets Announced – Pick The Right One For You
Games Workshop has announced three new Starter Sets for Warhammer 40,000: 10th Edition. Which one is right for you?
With the new edition here GW is going to launch three new starter sets that are designed for different entry (or re-entry) points for 40k players. If you missed Leviathan these are almost as good…and in some ways they are actually better. It really depends on how much stuff you need to get going in 40k.

Three Different Starter Sets For 40k
Warhammer 40,000: Introductory Set
The Introductory Starter Set is designed for folks who are literally starting from scratch and maybe haven’t heard of 40k at all. This box (theoretically) has everything you need to get started. It’s got a handful of models, a play mat, paints, a paint brush, dice, a range finder (aka 40k themed ruler) and even hobby clippers. Because these models are push fit you don’t need glue.
Personally, I’d still want to get a hobby knife for mould line remover for the burs you get after snipping. And I’d also use some plastic glue. But hey, that’s just me. If you’re starting from nothing this really does have all you need to get going. It even has a 48-page intro box that will go through the background of the game, has hobby guides, and even tutorials and training scenarios. It really is a goon introductory set.
Warhammer 40,000: Starter Set
The Starter Set, as the name implies, is probably the best option for the majority of 40k players. It’s not a bad option for new players (although lacks the hobby supplies). And it’s not a bad option for current players who want those new models included in the box. It’s got a larger 64-page Starter Handbook as well as dice, two range finders, and a cardboard gaming mat. Oh, and all the minis of course.
It also comes with some quick reference sheets that are basically the datacards printed out for quick access. And it’s got a mini core rules book on top of all that. If you have a collection of Space Marines or Tyranids already and were looking to get into 10th this is a great option. Besides, you probably already have all the hobby tools anyhow and have access to the datasheets as well as the Core Rules if you have the internet …and if you’re reading this that means you do.
Warhammer 40,000: Ultimate Starter Set
This box basically has everything the standard starter box has and then some! You’re getting the same miniatures plus a Librarian in Terminator Armour and a squad of Barbguants, too. Additionally, you’re getting some terrain to fight over as well. This box is better than the Starter for one other reason: both armies are now Combat Patrol size.
Yep, with the additional units in the Ultimate box you’ve basically hit the Combat Patrol level and can play against other Combat Patrols. That alone seems like the best reason to snag this over the Starter Set. The terrain is a nice bonus if you need it for your collection, too.
If you missed the Leviathan launch box these are your next best options. Depending on where you’re at with 40k determines which box is best for you. And honestly, if you’re completely new, I’d actually recommend the Introductory Set combined with the Ultimate Starter Set. The reason is the models from the Starter Set can be used to fill out the units in the Ultimate Set in terms of squad sizes for larger than Combat Patrol Games of 40. Meaning, you won’t be “wasting” those model. Plus you are gonna need those hobby tools if you don’t have some already.
Shoot if you got Leviathan, the Introductory set gets you those 10 Termagants and that last Ripper Base you need…just sayin.
