Expeditions board game sends you and your mech to the frozen reaches of Siberia, where a massive meteorite is awakening ancient corruption.

When Scythe was released, it was a massive success. Now, Stonemaier Games are returning to the alternate history world of Scythe in Expeditions.

Expeditions might be in the same world as Scythe, but as a game, it’s pretty different. In Expeditions, players are exploring the wilderness around the Tunguska River in Siberia. The expedition is led by Dr. Tarkovsky who ventures into the taiga to learn about the meteorite and its impact on the land.

Expeditions board game setup

Expeditions Board Game Overview

Expeditions is a competitive board game that’s a card-driven, engine-builder. It’s got all the exploration mechanics you’d expect on a game with modular map tiles. Players will use cards to gain power and unique worker abilities to guide their mechs around the map. It wouldn’t be a game in the Scytheiverse without mechs. There will be options to use workers, items, pieces of the meteorite, and even quests all to improve your mech while you vanquish the corruption from the land.

Like with Scythe, Expeditions is a board game with a lot of integrated moving parts. A unique pairing of characters and animal companions drives the engine building with tableau and card management. Meanwhile, gain additional workers to employ on your cards to activate unique abilities, and boast about your achievements to achieve victory.

It’s not a Scythe game if the technical game explanation isn’t filled to the brim with board game buzzwords, and I couldn’t be more excited.

The Expeditions board game is currently up for pre-order. It’s expected to start shipping in July or August, so get those orders in now! Fans of Scythe will remember how difficult it was to get a copy of the initial release. So, if you’re a fan of Scythe, you really should be considering pre-ordering.

But if you’re not fully sold on the Expeditions board game just yet, check out Jamey Stegmaier, the designer himself, playing through a few turns.

Personally, I love any game with hex-based tile exploration. So, I’m very excited to dig deep into the Explorations board game and see all that it has to offer.
