Warhammer 40K Needs More Co-op Missions Like ‘The Hunt For Fellwyrm’

The Warhammer+ team has a free mission for you to try out and you won’t be directly fighting each other in a semi-cooperative game.

In there might only be war in the grimdark but with this new mission you’ll actually be working together…sort of. With The Hunt For Fellwyrm GW is experimenting with a fun-looking mission that allows you and a buddy to take on a Tyranid horde. The winner is the player that scores the most Glory Kill Points with the tie going to the slayer of the Fellwyrm. It’s a friendly rivalry to see who can slay-out the hardest!

Battle The Fellwyrm

This particular mission was designed by Si of the Warhammer+ team and it looks like a ton of fun. It has some randomly generated elements so that every time you enter the lair of the Fellwyrm it will be different. That’s going to add some replayability options for you. Additionally, it’s also designed for players to bring in any faction they’d like — aside from Tyranids or Genestealer Cults.

 

The Tyranids are the antagonists in this mission. How it works is that both players are there to kill as many of them as possible to earn Glory Kill Points. That’s the main victory condition.

It does require you to have access to a wide array of Tyranid models to use as the “NPCs” for this fight so that’s one down side. In particular you’re going to want a Trygon to represent the Fellwyrm.

The Tyranid forces are randomly generated using a chart:

This coupled with the other mission rules can make for a very tough mission. But that’s the fun! You’ll want to give the entire rules a good read before you dive in but overall the mission is really a slugfest against the Tyranids. Why? Because they DO fight back…

There are a couple of things to keep in mind as well. The Tyranid Lair deck is 20 cards deep. But you only add the Joker card (aka the Fellwrym) if you’ve cleared at least 15 cards. It’s recommended that you use 20 terrain features as well — it’s going to be a crammed battlefield! Each piece of terrain is what players will search to determine what type of Tyranid creatures are hanging out there. The Deployment says deploy in Zone A or B but it really means in attack or defender zones. It doesn’t really matter as each player is deploying opposite each other.

Side A for Attacker. Side B for “B”efender.

 

Warhammer 40K Co-op Mission?

In a lot of ways this is a 40k co-op mission. Or at least a co-op game mode. You’re guns are limited to 12″ range and you’re deploying across the field long-ways away from the other players. The real enemy here is the Tyranids that are popping up from the terrain. If you’ve got access to a large Tyranid collection this is a great way for players to get a game in with a buddy while you’re both trying to slay out — and not against each other. The game will still have a winner as someone will score more points or get the final blow on the Fellwyrm. But it’s not a typical win/loss game of 40k.

Personally, I think 40k could use more game modes like this. This seems like a fantastic way to teach new players the basics while not having to play against them directly. It does feel a bit more “board gamey” than a typical mission of 40k but that’s the entire point! Each player just needs 700 points for their army, too. So it’s a good way for players to try out new things against a semi-random Tyranid force. I really want to give this mission a go!
