Goatboy’s Warhammer 40K: New Space Marines First Impressions

We got some Codex Space Marines preview this past week’s NOVA 40K Preview and it was a doozy. Here’s what it means for the game.

In fact it was a pretty spectacular release of stuff and a ton of info.  As you can see from this week we finally got a Tyranid codex and from there we can guess what we’ll see in Space Marines.  But hey – finally we get some Primaris Jump Pack dudes that can ride dirty with Shrike right?

New Marine Detachments

First of all the article and what we have seen from the new Nid book gives us a good idea that we won’t be seeing “Ultramarines” detachments.  Instead we are going to see broader “army type” detachments that fit the theme of the army.  I know we are all clamoring for our legion stuff – but this isn’t too bad as it sounds like one of the six different army styles would fit into our specific Legion/Chapters.

Which means we’ll most likely have a “heavy” detachment that loves to be yellow.  A crazy assault based detachment that likes to wear black.  A sneaky detachment that has the most gothic hair.  A green fire obsessed detachment or maybe torrent obsessed detachment.  A jack of all trades that wants to be blue. Oh and I bet a very fast assault based one as well – that loves white.  All of these things are most likely going to show up with something that tweaks Oath in some way I bet.  Or at least tweaks the doctrines.

Lots of New Minis

From there it is hard we don’t know yet – but I am sure will be hearing about it soon.  Then on top of that we got a lot of new minis to fill in some of the Marine units that got kicked over to Legends.  I am kind of sad we are not seeing bigger Assault Terminators or at least the kit having those options.  It feels like a miss as just a simple extra assault sprue would cement this kit into something of a must have for new players and older ones who are just wanting to update their guys.

Oh and it was also weird we didn’t see any Space Marine vehicles either.  There wasn’t a magical new Dreadnought or tank like thing.  I am still surprised we didn’t see a Tech Marine with giant super gun.  They love to have those weird guns in the game too so it is weird to not see it.  I still think it could show up but will see.  The release looks pretty beefy as is with a ton of options and other cool things.

Fingered Crossed for Balance

Are you excited to see Space Marines come out?  Maybe with it being the second codex of 10th Edition it might not be too broken?  Codex Tyranids isn’t looking bonkers currently and I hope Marines follows the same model – strong but not too strong format we saw there.  I just don’t want another set of six months of broken Space Marine nonsense wrecking my face and all my friends who don’t want to play the good guys.

Still I am excited as I can finish filling out my red-armed Marine army, as I call them.  It will be nice to have all those fun options available and just being able to truly build a bigger Primaris-like force with all the new minis.

Are you excited about the new Marines or would you rather have more Xenos stuff come out?
