Happy Starfield Day To Those Who Celebrate
Starfield is here, and it’s every bit as big and open and Bethesda as we’ve come to expect. Everyone, into the Starfield!
Listen, we’ll keep this short and sweet because this is time we could both be playing Starfield right now. But if you’ve been on the fence, you should definitely jump off of it. All of space beckons. Or at least a close approximation of all of space.
Starfield, if you’re somehow unaware, is Bethesda’s latest open world game, and it pushes the phrase to the extremes. It’s not just an open world, it’s space! There are more than 1,000 planets waiting for you out there. And yes, many of them may be empty. And Pluto might not be real.
But that’s Bethesda at their Bethesda-est. It’s a not about having a perfect simulation. Or recreating things down to the last detail. Starfield, like the Fallouts and Elder Scrolls before it, is a toybox that draws you in and turns you loose. There’s a reason early reviews are saying “the game really opens up once you get past the main story.” Like it’s some kind of obstacle to overcome. Or vegetables to finish before you get to the succulent dessert.
But when was the last time you finished a Bethesda game’s main story? The best stories are always buried in the sidequests and characters and emergent little narrative moments that you blunder into sideways. Who is this orc and why do they want me dead? Why do none of the people in Whiterun care that I’m Archmage of the Wizard’s College?
And Starfield is full of toys and levers and a surprising amount of potatoes to play with.
