Warhammer 40K: Warhammer Day Reveals – The Good, The Bad, And The Confusing
Games Workshop showed off some upcoming kits for Warhammer 40,000. Let’s chat about the hits and misses from the show.
This past weekend was Warhammer Day. The 40th anniversary celebration of all things Warhammer. There was a lot of stuff going on and a lot packed into the one hour stream. Today, we’re going to touch on the 40k side of the house. So let’s get into it!
The Winners
First up, we have the reworked Imotekh the Stormlord. Personally, I think this mini is a hit for a couple of reasons. The main reason is that it’s a really nice rework of the OG kit. It’s a great nod to Imotekh’s classic pose. And it’s in plastic now (which is the second reason).
That said, I kind of wish he had gotten more added to him — perhaps just some extra bulk like GW did with Illuminor Szeras who got a major rework. Still, I liked this update.
The next big winner is the Striking Scorpions who are finally getting a plastic kit! We got some minor details about the kit itself in that it will have even more options that the ones shown. I’m also hoping we see a rework for Karandras eventually, too. I think these models are a fine addition to the range.
The Bad
How about those Codex Reveals?! Or really the lack of codex reveals. We got like…two bits of info from the upcoming books (which we already knew about). This was pretty lackluster and a little disappointing. Oh well. Hopefully this means that GW will roll out more info about these respective books as we get closer to their release dates.
Okay, this isn’t really bad per se, but it’s underwhelming. Only because we’d seen these models before. If we didn’t know about them already then they probably would be in the good column. But this was a big reveal for Warhammer Day, which is basically GW’s Birthday, and showing off models we’d already seen was kinda…bad. We do like the updates for the Scouts, we just wish there was a bit more to show from Warhammer Day.
The Confused
This model caused quite the stir online. There seems to a bit a pretty big split in the community about this one. Part of the community is rallying against how “weird” this model is and dislikes it. The other part of the community is “pro weird” and wants more of this in Warhammer 40,000 in general. This is very much a nod to the John Blanche style and school of Warhammer Art.
He famously created a numerous amount of art for both 40k and WFB — many pieces of which have become quite iconic in their own right. I mean, the term Blanchitsu was created to describe this style and it’s synonymous with Grimdark.
Earlier this year he retired from GW (Congrats to him, btw — I hope he’s enjoying his retirement as it’s well earned). But his style and artwork is still influencing the universes of Warhammer to this day. The “weird” of the Adeptus Mechanicus is very much influenced by him and that style isn’t for everyone. But it IS very much a part of 40k.
So if you were on the “it’s too weird” side of things, well, hopefully this tidbit explains it. I think that it also explains why some folks want more of it. Blanchitsu is Grimdark and things get weird in 40k.
