MTG: Weekly EDH – Top Five – Return of the Elves
Tymna’s holding strong, but Atraxa and Lathril are sneaking in for the kill. Here are the top EDH Commanders of the week.
Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander. For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering, where you use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.
Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory.
EDHRec.com is a great source for Commander info and can give you ideas to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one. They also provide a definitive ranking of which Commanders are ranking the highest each week. These are the top five Commanders for this week, based on decks built and logged playtime.
Tymna the Weaver
Making her way to the top spot, Tymna is proving her weaving is second to none. With access to most of the wedges, shards, and Nephilim colors, you can build Tymna however you need to get the job done. The return of Thrasios as an Ixalan guest means she won’t leave the top spot any time soon.
The Ur-Dragon
The Ur-Dragon is the undisputed king of typal combat, and he’s jumped up to the second spot. With his five colors giving you access to every Dragon under the sun, it might not be long before he unseats the top spot. Ixalan isn’t Dragon heavy, but the discover and descend triggers might amp him up a bit.
Atraxa, Praetor’s Voice
Sliding down agan to third, Atraxa is starting to show her age a little. Still, with her suite of deadly abilities, this ex-Mirran proves why she’s religious demagogue and fanatic Elesh Norn‘s favorite child. All the new shenanigans shown in the Merfolk deck are probably going to shoot her right back to the top on release, and all those new Cats are right up her alley.
Lathril, Blade of the Elves
Back from the woods after a few weeks off, Lathril is here to lay the smack on those who invade the forest. Descend plays perfectly into Golgari colors, and Lathril has no problem with letting an Elf or two kick the bucket. After all, in these colors, they won’t be in the graveyard long.
Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver
Closing out the fearsome five, we have one of the nastiest Zombie Commanders out there. While he isn’t quite the power piece Grimgrin is, he has far more utility than his chunky friend. Plus, in a world where sacrifice and card advantage are king, he outdoes his corpulant compatriot in almost every way. Not to sound like a broken record, but descend is about to be his best friend.
