MTG: Weekly EDH – Top Five – When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth
The top spots have been overtaken by a Jurassic threat, and a fishman is sneaking in. Here are Magic:The Gathering’s top EDH Commanders of the week.
Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander. For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering, where you use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.
Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory.

They also provide a definitive ranking of which Commanders are ranking the highest each week. These are the top five Commanders for this week, based on decks built and logged playtime.
Gishath, Sun’s Avatar
Taking the top spot with gusto, Gishath the Dino King stomps into the Top Five. Thanks to all the new dinosaurs in Ixalan, as well as the fire reprints, Gishath’s dominance has returned in a big way. With the new discover mechanics, Gishath can bring the Naya nonsense like never before, so it’s no surprise he shook out Dragons, Zombies, and Angels for the top seat.
Pantlaza, Sun-Favored
Another newcomer to the Top Five, Pantalaza is the face commander of the Veloci-Ramp-Tor preconstructed deck. While the base deck isn’t the strongest, it’s easy to modify into an absolute powerhouse with Pantlaza’s effect. Pantlaza and Gishath can easily run identical decks, just with the Commander swapped, so it’s no surprise to seem them in the top two spots.
Tymna the Weaver
Seems like nothing can unseat the creepy weaver from the Top Five. Partner remains a powerful ability, and the reprint of Thrasios, her favorite buddy, is keeping her going strong. That said, I’ll be surprised if she survives the incoming Vampire wave.
The Ur-Dragon
The Ur-Dragon is the undisputed king of typal combat, but Gishath and Pantlaza synergize better with the new set. Still, Domain Dragons are a strong play, so he might unseat the top spot once the dino-hype dies down a bit.
Hakbal of the Surging Soul
At the bottom of the pack is another newcomer, the fearsome fishman Hakbal. Personally, I love this Commander, and think he deserves a higher spot. Once more players figure out the insane tricks you can pull off with Hakbal’s powerful explore triggers, I think he’ll skyrocket.
