Boyfriend Dungeon, the dungeon-crawling dating sim, launches its official TTRPG adaptation in December. Talk about bae blades.

Back in the elder days (2021), Boyfriend Dungeon launched to fairly critical acclaim. With its mix of arcade-y dungeon-crawling hack and slash combat with unique weapons that you also date, Boyfriend Dungeon was a big hit. And now, developer Kitfox Games will release a tabletop adaptation of the game in December. You can find it on Steam, of all places.

And what’s more, you can see the game in action tomorrow. Dating sims? In a tabletop roleplaying game? In this economy? What’s not to love—the answer to this is a massive spoiler, so we won’t opine here. But instead, check out the announcement.

Boyfriend Dungeon TTRPG Coming In December

The cult classic shack-and-slash, in an all-new format. Boyfriend Dungeon: Life On the Edge is a tabletop roleplaying game that lets up to 4 players (plus their Master of Ceremonies) explore their inner psyche, confront their fears, and also smooch swords! Roleplay as your favorite lasersaber or make up your own weapon-person. Wield your friends, defeat your enemies, and level up your love… around the table.

Includes 3 beautiful, printable PDFs:

    • The Core Rulebook (50 pages)
    • Character Sheet templates (6, one for each weapon-type)
    • The Mini-RPG, a one-shot quickstart guide (5 pages)

All you need to bring is two six-sided dice and your imagination!

As you might have guessed from the requirement of two six-sided dice, the Boyfriend Dungeon TTRPG is loosely based on the Powered by the Apocalypse framework. Though the game uses its own system: Life on the Edge, but you can clearly see its RPG mechanics lineage in the character sheet, pictured above.

At the core of it all are the idea of people who transform into weapons. And then they’re wielded and wooed in equal measure.

The rules were composed by Maso Perez in coordination with Kitfox Games in order to create the ideal storytelling experience in the vein of (but distinct from) the Boyfriend Dungeon video game. But you need not be stuck in Verona Beach if you’re craving something more fantastic. You can easily use it to roleplay as Arthurian knight-swords, anxious roommates, an adventuring party, star-crossed Shakespearean rapiers, or any other weapon-people you can imagine.

It’ll be interesting to see what the playbooks are like. And how they differentiate one weapon from another. Or if every weapon is its own construction, picked from the same movelist. Even more interesting will be how, if at all, love is in the air in The Boyfriend Dungeon TTRPG.

But you can see for yourself tomorrow afternoon on Kitfox’s Twitch channel. Which can either be a fun break from the family gathering, or the weirdest conversation starter at the lunch table.

Talk about “wielding” your sword.
