Curious about Critical Role‘s new horror anthology RPG Candela Obscura? A new bundle on DriveThruRPG is your best bet!

Earlier this year (and not much earlier, either), Critical Role‘s publishing imprint, Darrington Press, released into the wilds its new RPG of occult investigations and eldritch secrets, Candela Obscura. And it’s never been easier to jump into it, with a new bundle on DriveThruRPG.

The fittingly titled Candela Obscura bundle packages together both the core rulebook in PDF form as well as the Roll20 VTT version of the rules. So whether you’re playing in person, or online, you’ll have the rules you need at your fingertips.

Of course, you could always just pick up whichever individual version you need. But it’s 2023, the year of everyone wanting you to buy things twice. Which sort of highlights the coming problem for D&D’s big virtual tabletop push.

But, if all you wanted was the Roll20 version, good news, as Candela Obscura (Roll20 edition) is also discounted for a limited time. But for now, let’s check out the bundle.

Candela Obscura Bundle on DriveThruRPG

In the Candela Obscura bundle, you get two items. Well technically you get three, counting the Quickstart Guide, but that’s available for free, so, is it really a “bundle” type value? But the two other items in the bundle are the Candela Obscura Roll20 conversion as well as the Candela Obscura core book. If you’ve seen our writeup on the core rules, you know the drill by now, but in a nutshell, the game casts you as investigators who are members of a secret society dedicated to both uncovering paranormal mysteries and dealing with occult threats, that simmer beneath the world.

Using the Illuminated Worlds system, which is a very Forged-in-the-Dark kind of system, you’ll play as one of a few different playbooks and put together a crew of investigators. There’s a unique spin on magic and mystery that is fun to play around with here. And as far as Critical Role’s first “full RPG” offering goes, it’s not a bad jumping-off point.

One of the shiny new toys here, though, is the Roll20 package. You get the Roll20 VTT conversion, which grants you access to Candela Obscura on Roll20, as the name suggests. But what does that mean? Well, what does anything mean in this crazy, mixed-up world of 2023 coming to an end? In this case, specifically, though, it means you get the Candela Obscura digital compendium, as well as the Roll20 Character Sheets, which if you’ve ever tried to make your own, are an absolute godsend.

You also get the VTT Play Aide, which is a catalog of “dozens of page scenes to aid theater-of-the-mind play! A custom Countdown Die, allowing your players to visualize the time ticking down” as well as the token and art pack, which, again, if you’ve ever played on ROll20 and one of your characters is just a random bicycle because they have a handlebar mustache, you know how nice it is to have these.

The Candela Obscura bundle is on sale for a limited time. Though both products are also available on their own (and also discounted). I’m not here to judge which you get, just to let you know you can do either.
