MTG: Flower Power – Top 5 Temur Commanders

With all the power of nature and the elements on your side, your MTG opponents will wish they’d brought an umbrella when they face Temur.

Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander. For the uninitiated Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering. You use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, aka, your Commander.

Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory. EDHRec.com is a great source for Commander info and can give you ideas to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one.

Temur combines the three “natural” colors of Blue, Green, and Red into a hurricane of force. Commanders from this Wedge usually want to be at the head of an army, and then empower their army along the way. Whether that’s by making them bigger or just creating copies of them, Temur will almost always have the biggest force backing it up. And if creatures don’t work, a literal storm of spells is just as good.

Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm

My personal “pet” Commander, Miirym is the Dragon Commander for players who want to blot out the sun with value. She’s already a powerhouse as a 6/6 with flying and ward for six, but it’s her ability that makes her great. Every nontoken Dragon that hits the battlefield on your side makes a nonlegendary copy of itself. That triggers every ETB twice and doubles up on your deadly scaled army. Plus, since they aren’t legendary, you can generate some of the most powerful abilities multiple times. Special shout out to Old Gnawbone, who usually is a scoop once he gets doubled.

Animar, Soul of Elements

Animar doesn’t double up your creatures like Miirym does, but he still helps you generate your army faster. Every time you cast a creature spell, Animar gets bigger. The bigger Animar is, the less all your stompy creatures cost. Best of all, he’s immune to the two most common removal colors in the game.

Magus Lucea Kane

A Commander from the Warhammer 40k Universes Beyond set, Lucea is all about the counters. She puts a +1/+1 counter on one of your creatures every combat, which is easy to double or even triple in her colors. Her second ability is obscene, allowing her to add a little extra X mana and then doubling up on said spell. Imagine pouring a ton of mana into a Fireball, only to have it split down the middle and take out two of your opponents rather than one.

Kalamax, the Stormsire

You should definitely fear the approaching storm if it’s attached to a big angry Dinosaur. Kalamax loves to copy your instants, and buffs himself every time he does (or any OTHER time you copy a spell). Much like Lucea, he can do a surprising amount of scatter damage very fast.

Xyris, the Writhing Storm

 

Just when you thought you were safe from Snakes in the air, Xyris is here to remind you they are EVERYWHERE. This 3/5 beater doesn’t mind sharing the wealth and giving you and your opponent a few extra cards. After all, every card they draw gives you a Snake, so you’ll never need to pay the 1 again.
